His Boss Denied His Raise for Two Years. He’s Had Enough, so He Told Him That Since His Pay Is “Below Average,” His Work Will Be, Too!

This TikToker shared a video re-enacting his conversation with his department manager about his work performance. However, what he said left her speechless!

Woke Employees

Nowadays, employees are getting more and more confident about asking for what they want. And, when they don’t get something they deserve, they make sure to make their employers aware of how unhappy they are with their decision.

Sharing His Experiences With the World

This is precisely what this TikToker, Kris, did when he shared a re-enactment of his conversation with his department manager.

A Re-Enactment

In 2022, he posted a video that he said was a “recreation” of a real conversation he had with his employer. The video re-enactment zoomed in on his performance at work.

The Characters

The video only showed Kris on the screen. However, viewers also heard a woman’s voice—his department manager.

However, this voice belonged to Kris’s voice actor friend, who was helping him with the video.

Differences in His Performance

The video started with the woman saying they would be discussing the “difference” in Kris’s work performance.

She said, “Namely, I want to discuss the difference in your performance between last year and 2020.”

You’re Less Focused

The woman continued, explaining what the company had observed.

She said, “You were the top-rated employee in 2020, but it doesn’t feel like you’ve been nearly as present or focused since then.”

I Agree!

Kris could be seen nodding at the woman’s voice and saying, “Yeah, yeah.”

So, the woman asked, “What’s changed?”

I Don’t Get What I Deserve!

This is where the discussion took a turn for the worse. Kris started telling the woman about him not getting what he deserved and not being paid what he deserved.

He said, “Well, yes. In 2020—it was the second year in a row I didn’t get a raise, even though I was the top employee. And when I asked why I couldn’t get a raise, you said my pay was ‘fair market value’ for my position.”

Below-Average Pay

It wasn’t the end of Kris’s demonstration of the company’s unfair treatment toward him.

He added, “When I asked where my pay falls on the pay grade scale, you said it was ‘below the median.’ So it was below the average of what I could make in my position.”

Kris’s Decision

Because he was being paid below average, Kris ultimately decided to give the company below-average work, too!

He said, “At that point, I just decided I’m going to become a fair market value employee and put in a below-average amount of effort.”

It’s What I’m Paid to Do!

He backed his decision by saying that below-average work was what the company was paying him to do.

Kris shared, “It’s what I feel like you pay me to do. You’ve created an environment where there’s no incentive for me to work hard, so I don’t.”

She’s Speechless

The video doesn’t cover the woman’s response. However, it seems what Kris said made her speechless, as there was a deliberate pause of silence in the video before it ended.

Redditors’ Opinions on the Matter

Unfortunately, many people from the online community had their fair share of bad bosses.

One shared, “I had a heart attack at my job, and my boss came over and lightly kicked me with his foot to see if I was alive. I asked him to call 911, and he said if I could talk to him, then I could also call 911. When the medics came, they rushed me to the ER, and I was in the hospital for 11 days. When I came back to work, the boss was mad he had missed his vacation due to my heart attack. He said he was leaving to go on vacation, and I was in charge. I said, ‘Not so fast; I quit,’ and a few other words I cannot type on here and walked out. After, HR called me three weeks later, saying I had been getting paid all that time and was demanding I repay them. I told them the nine years of horror I suffered at the hands of that man and that I would be getting a lawyer. They settled out of court, and the manager was fired. I had so much evidence on him, with records I kept, that they settled within a week.”

Negative Reactions

A couple of users put OP in the line of fire, doubting his skills and contributions. However, more people were backing him up than judging him.

One said, “So why didn’t you just quit? I would have fired you on the spot.” Another countered and said, “Good bosses inspire and get the best out of the employees they have. Terrible ones act selfish.”

It’s Unfair

People also noted that they feel for OP. At times, good work gets rewarded with more work.

“It’s hard to write this. However, doing more productive and efficient work than your coworkers only gets you more work to do. Yes, this is the voice of experience,” said one user. Another wrote, “I still don’t get what the problem is with paying people. Corporations will fall all over themselves to pay the CEO millions but refuse to pay the people that make the widgets a living wage.”

Do you think OP’s telling the truth? Have you encountered anything similar?
