He Refused to Give His Sister His Share of the $750,000 Inheritance Their Mom Left, but His Dad’s Demanding He Give $250,000 to Help Her Family!

This user learned that his dad planned to leave everything he was supposed to inherit to his sister. He has plans for the money and will never allow him to do so!

Division of Assets

OP’s (Original Poster) mom passed away, and he, his dad, and his sister are currently determining what assets she had in her name and which assets were going to whom.

In total, OP would receive $250,000, his older sister would receive $250,000, and his dad would get $200,000.

Dad’s Inclination

However, the issue is that OP’s dad is inclined to pool all the money and give everything to his older sister, her husband, and their two kids.

Budgeting for a Home

His sister’s family currently lives in an apartment. So, apart from their dad leaving his sister with the pooled inheritance, he also plans on setting aside some more to help them buy a new home in cash.

OP noted, “We live in California, and it’s quite expensive.”

Not on His Radar

Sadly, OP felt like his dad was “pushing this to happen” without thinking about his future and what he wanted to do.

He wrote, “He is under the impression that when the money does get to each of us, we will be putting it into a joint account, which I have no intention of doing.”

His Own Plans

When OP receives the money, he plans on placing the funds into a three-month to one-year cash dividend or bond until he decides what he’ll do.

He’s also saving for a down payment because he intends to buy a home in three to five years. OP noted, “This money will essentially accrue interest until that day comes.”

Not Enough Support

OP’s main reason for not wanting to give his sister his share of the inheritance is that he feels that if he does give her the money now, in a few years, when he eventually wants to buy his own home, he “won’t have the same financial backing” his dad is giving his sister.

Good Intentions

Even though everything seems so one-sided, for OP, his dad shouldn’t be put on the spot.

He wrote, “Please don’t take this as my dad has anything against me; he just doesn’t want to see their family live in an apartment their whole lives.”

Poor Financial Decisions

Sadly, OP’s also not confident his sister would be able to make good use of the money, based on prior experience.

OP said, “My sister and her husband are not the most financially savvy people. They make a decent income but nothing crazy.”

Comfortable Living Situation

On the other hand, OP can save more because he has fewer expenses.

He lives at home with his dad. He’s also an engineer who made a good amount of money.

Ready for Retirement

OP’s dad also had no immediate need for the money. He noted that he’s “financially ready to retire” whenever he chooses to do so.

However, at the moment, he decided to keep working because he enjoyed the job, and it kept him busy.

So Many Questions

OP doesn’t want to give in to his dad’s plans. However, he can’t help but ask if he’s doing the wrong thing.

He asked, “Is it wrong of me to want to keep the money intended for me so that I have a better opportunity to buy a home when the time comes?”

Sister’s Understanding Heart

If OP chooses to keep the money for himself, he’s pretty confident his sister won’t contest it.

OP said, “I know my sister will be understanding and not take this as if I have something against her.”

Planning Ahead

All things considered, OP wants to maintain a good relationship with his family while securing his future.

He wrote, “I don’t want this to become an issue between me and my dad. I’m just looking out for my own future.”

Establishing Boundaries

In one of the comments, OP added an update to his story. He noted that he had a conversation with his sister and his dad, told them he wouldn’t give them his share, and said he planned to use it for his future.

He noted, “My sister was completely understanding and agreed it’s my money to do with what I want, and I’m under no obligation to hand anything over. She told my dad to stop trying to guilt me into giving it up.”

A Heartbreaking Development

However, unexpectedly, his dad got really angry with what he said. He was “pretty p*****” about his decision and threatened to cut him out of his will and everything else.

OP’s not sure if his dad was only saying it out of anger or if he meant it. But now, he feels lost, as he didn’t expect his dad to react like he did.

What Redditors Have to Say

For users, the first step OP needs to take is to talk to his dad.

One suggested, “Better have a talk with your dad. You are an adult, that money is yours, and you are not responsible for your sister’s housing. At this point, she will receive $250,000, which is a serious downpayment. If he plans to add his $200,000 plus more, then she’s going to have quite a lot of money. The fact that you are okay with him giving all that money to her and not giving you the equal amount is pretty surprising, given I’d be p***** if my siblings were getting so much more than me. But you have a right to the money, to have a future home and potentially a family of your own, and so on. Keep your inheritance. It was for you; otherwise, your mother would have given it to your sister. Not the a**hole.”

It’s 100% Yours!

Redditors also reassured OP that $250,000 was enough for his plans and he should fight for what he owned.

“Not the a**hole; $250,000 is more than enough to put down on a home and have a decent mortgage rate. I don’t think it’s fair that your dad is trying to spend the money that your mom left you on your sister. I mean, if he wants to give up his $200,000, she will have $450,000 to purchase a home, which is more than enough. I say let him know now; that way, he isn’t blindsided when it happens,” said one woman.

The same person said, “Let him know what your plans are and express to him that you are not willing to give up your inheritance to fund your sister’s home purchase. I think it is unreasonable to even ask. I’m guessing she is Daddy’s little girl. If that’s the case, he better dip into his retirement fund. What’s also crazy is that she would be willing to accept your inheritance. So much hate.”

What do you think about what OP’s going through? Do you think he deserved to be treated this way?
