OP (Original Poster) didn’t think it was fair for his sister to receive most of their inheritance, so he started protesting against it. But his parents think he’s being selfish!
Money Talks

The day before this story was posted, OP, his two older brothers, their eldest sister, and their parents had a discussion about their will.
During their conversation, OP’s parents told them they’re splitting the inheritance into five.
Does She Deserve It?

The will states that OP’s sister will get two-fifths of the inheritance while the rest would get one-fifth each.
OP wrote, “Their reasoning is that my sister ‘sacrificed’ her childhood for our family, so it’s only fair she gets compensated.”
A Sad Period in Their Lives

OP then explained that when they were younger, OP’s dad’s business partner “screwed him over,” so there was a time when they were “broke and in debt.”
He shared, “My parents had to work multiple jobs to keep us afloat.”
His Sister Stepped In

His sister had to step in and be the adult so their parents could work. So, she would babysit them all the time while their parents were out.
It Wasn’t Hard!

However, for OP, this wasn’t a big deal. He said they were “calm kids,” so it wasn’t hard to take care of them.
He wrote, “All she had to do was feed us and keep an eye on us.” They didn’t make any trouble as all they did was play games and do their homework.
Not a Big Deal

OP understands that, in some way, his sister did sacrifice something. Still, it wasn’t enough for her to get the lion’s share of the inheritance.
He said it was probably not thrilling but “not exactly a tremendous hardship.”
His Complaints

So, OP immediately “complained” to his parents and his brothers. He told them their decision to split the money unevenly was “insane.”
It’s Just Not Right!

For OP, his sister doesn’t deserve that big of a cut.
He said, “She’s financially the best off out of all of us. She doesn’t have any kids and a dual income with her partner.”
A Disappointment

It seems OP’s older brothers agree since OP mentioned that their parents expressed their disappointment in them. They also told OP and his brothers to “reflect on themselves.”
Sister’s Thoughts

OP’s sister didn’t say a word at the time, even while their parents spoke. However, after, she sent them a text saying she had “zero intention” of taking two-fifths of the inheritance.
She did, however, label them all as “a**holes.”
Is It Just Me?

OP still feels like his parents’ decision is unfair. However, he also asked, “Am I the a**hole for feeling like this split is unfair?”
The Community’s Thoughts

For users, there’s no doubt that OP and his brother are a**holes.
“You’re the a**hole. Even if she just stayed at home while you were there, she didn’t have teenage freedom, and she made sacrifices and took on responsibilities. It doesn’t matter how affluent she is now; your parents are trying to pay her back for what they couldn’t pay her then,” said one woman.
It’s Not Her Fault!

People also pointed out that it was not OP’s sister’s fault that she was more financially stable than the rest of them.
One Redditor pointed out, “You’re the a**hole. Your failure to make as much as she does isn’t your parents’ problem.” Then, one man commented, “Plus, those years could be a major factor why she chose not to have kids or doesn’t have kids yet. She already raised her siblings! You’re the a**hole.”
You Do Need to Reflect

Redditors also noted that, being young then, OP probably forgot much of what his sister did.
This user wrote, “Yeah, I don’t think OP has a clear memory of every argument his sister had to arbitrate. Every meal she prepared for them. Every injury she took care of. And on and on. Even well-behaved children are exhausting to take care of. Imagine being a teenager being tasked with that burden for the good of your family. Good on her for stepping up.”
Another said, “All of the dances or events she missed out on, all of the nights she couldn’t just go ‘goof off’ with her friends, that she missed a good portion of the teenage dating life, that she missed a lot of opportunities like volunteering or part-time job for money for herself, etc. All OP is thinking about is how unfair it is that the fact that he has kids doesn’t automatically entitle him to more money just because—entitled child and entitled parent in one sentence in one person right there.”
What do you think? Is OP in the wrong here?
