This Redditor was the only one of four kids honest with their dad about their mom’s affair. So, it wasn’t a surprise when he became the sole inheritor of his father’s whole estate!
One Prince and Three Princesses
OP (Original Poster) is the youngest of four kids and the only boy. His sisters, Honey, Beth, and Vicky, are 21, 24, and 26.
A Heartbreaking Moment
Sadly, three years before this story was posted, when OP was just 17, he caught his mom having an affair. When his mom learned he knew, she tried to “talk him out” of telling his dad.
OP’s mom even went as far as offering to buy things he wanted. She tried to bribe him, but it didn’t work on OP.
Before things became worse, OP made sure he told his dad about what he knew. As expected, this was the start of the breaking point of their family.
Impending Divorce and Unfiltered Truths
OP’s mom and dad started arguing, and his father eventually filed for divorce.
He wrote, “During the divorce proceedings, it was revealed that the three of my sisters knew about the affair but never said anything. In fact, Vicky, who has always been very spoiled, blackmailed my mom repeatedly to get expensive things.”
The Utter Betrayal
OP’s dad was undeniably hurt by how his kids betrayed him. So, he cut them all out of his life for a while.
After some time, he reconnected with his daughters, but he was so hurt that their relationship never returned to how it was before. He could no longer trust them.
Amendments to the Will
His dad also made some revisions to his will. He left everything to OP, apart from $300 to be split between his sisters.
In fact, they’re only getting the money so they won’t be able to contest the will.
His Sole Decision
OP said he knew about the changes in the will when it was made. However, he didn’t stop him or tell his sisters anything.
He shared, “His money, his choice.”
No Going Back
Aside from this, OP’s dad hired a “cutthroat” lawyer when he was divorcing OP’s mom. Through this, he ensured she would get nothing upon divorce and when he died.
OP’s mom was left penniless, and it reached a point where she even had to live with Beth, one of OP’s sisters.
Lost Father Figure
Sadly, OP’s dad got infected with COVID-19 and passed away. OP and his family buried his dad two weeks before this story was posted.
When the will was read, OP’s sisters learned about the amendment and the reasons behind their dad’s decision.
OP wrote, “My dad was a great investor, saver, and all in all very lucky when it came to money, so there was quite a fair amount being left to me on top of his house.”
Almost immediately after the will reading, OP’s sisters demanded that he split the money with them and their mother. But OP hasn’t even spoken to his mom since the affair unfolded!
The Pressure Is On!
Since then, OP’s sisters have been calling him and their dad “s******” and all sorts of other names.
OP wrote, “My aunt said that maybe I should split to keep the peace, but I don’t want to as I feel that would disrespect my father’s wishes, and he already suffered enough disrespect.”
Apart from this, they’ve been trying to guilt-trip OP into agreeing. They argued that Honey, one of his sisters, just revealed she was pregnant.
So, they said their dad would want something left for his first grandchild.
What Do I Do?
OP’s feeling incredibly conflicted.
He said, “Am I the a**hole for not splitting my inheritance with my sisters? I don’t think so, but others are saying I am and that ‘they’re his children too.’”
The Community’s Reactions
The community flocked to the comments section to assure OP that he did nothing wrong. His sisters made a choice, and now they must face the consequences of their actions.
“Not the a**hole. Your sisters made their choices. Your father made his. Reap what you sow and all that,” said the top commenter.
A woman agreed, saying, “Exactly as posted above. Your dad made his choice, and you stuck by him and showed him you were loyal. Just out of curiosity, did your sisters try to be in his life after the divorce or want any part of his life when he cut them out? If not, that shows how much they cared about their father and now only want his money because they were left out.”
Though Redditors agree that OP’s not in the wrong, some users want him to be cautious and prepare for the consequences of his own actions.
One said, “Be aware though that if you go down this path, you’ll likely forever cut yourself off from your mother and sisters for good. There will be no coming back. Your father maybe should have remembered that his problems shouldn’t have been your problems, and this money will divide you.”
Another Redditor pointed out, “Also, if you chose to share with them once, chances are, when they need more money, they’ll come back asking again for more.”
What should OP’s next step be? If you were OP, what would you do?
