Her Boss Fired Her With “No Explanation.” It Was So Sudden That She Didn’t Even Know How She’d Afford to Pay Rent. What Should She Do Now?

This Redditor was so happy to have found a decent job, but to her surprise, even “good” bosses don’t really care about their employees. Now she’s fired and has nowhere to go!

No Work to Come Back To

The night before this story was posted, OP (Original Poster) received a message from her boss. She was absolutely shell-shocked when he told her she was fired—without explanation or warning.

She was simply told “not to come back.”

Utterly Clueless

OP can’t come to terms with what’s happening. After all, she was supposed to return to work the next day, and then suddenly, she didn’t have a job and didn’t even know why.

Generic Responses

Her boss only told her that she “wasn’t a good fit.” But she’s only been working with the team for four months, and so far, in her opinion, everything was going well.

A Model Employee?

In fact, for OP, everything was perfect at her new job.

She said, “Up until yesterday, I thought I was a pretty good employee.”

Great Examples

OP even listed some things she believed made her a good fit for the company, contrary to what her employer said.

She wrote, “I knew how to do my job, I showed up consistently, I worked well with my co-workers, and customers regularly gave me good feedback. And the store is currently understaffed.”

Her Only Shortcoming

In some ways, OP acknowledged that she had some shortcomings. However, these things were out of her control, and she explained that her boss knew of them before hiring her.

OP shared, “I have several chronic illnesses that have forced me to leave work early two times and take semi-frequent bathroom breaks—like once an hour or so. My boss is aware of my illness.”

No Solid Evidence

Although this is the case, OP’s not sure this is the real reason behind her termination. At the same time, she knows she’ll never get her boss to admit it.

Formal Notice

After all, she only received a written confirmation that she was fired—there wasn’t any official report or reason stated, though.

It was just an email from her boss confirming her termination.

At a Loss

Now, OP’s going to have to file for unemployment. She doesn’t even know how she’ll afford to pay the next month’s rent!

Heartbreaking Realization

More than that, OP is disheartened by the fact that, at first, she actually believed that she had a boss who cared about his employees.

She wrote, “Up until now, I had been thinking I was so lucky to have finally found a job that treats me like a person.”

Legal Hurdles

Sadly, the laws in the United States make her boss’ actions “completely legal.”

OP added, “I guess even the ‘good’ bosses really don’t give a s*** about us, huh.”

The Community’s Thoughts

Some users agreed that OP should file for unemployment right away. By doing so, her boss might be forced to give her the reason for her termination.

One Redditor said, “If you file, in most states, they have to respond with the reason you were terminated.”

But another said, “They don’t have to give a reason unless they plan to fight the unemployment. ‘Not a good fit’ is a generic way of letting someone go, and it is sufficient for the unemployment board.”

Too Close for Comfort

Others then shared similar experiences they had with bad bosses and bad companies.

A woman wrote, “I was rather unceremoniously fired from my last job where I was there for six years and generated hundreds of millions of dollars worth of revenue for the company, but I was sacrificed for a very shady vice president. But you can’t really say that to someone when you let them go. I pushed for a reason. B****** couldn’t even look me in the eye.”

She added, “So they declined to give me any reason and then decided to lie when unemployment called asking for their side, and I had a very easy rebuttal for the singular false claim they made for my termination. They said that my attendance and tardiness were a problem, which is hilarious because I worked in an office in a different state by myself, and my timesheets showed that I routinely worked in excess of 40 hours a week. Unemployment was less than amused and ruled in my favor.”

They Need to Face the Consequences!

Then, some people were furious at the fact that employers could get away with something as inhumane as what they did to OP.

“It’s way past time to start giving businesses or employers the same legal system everyone else is forced to deal with. There needs to be really serious consequences, or they will just keep f****** everyone over. I know this is what Republicans prefer, but it’s inhuman and morally reprehensible,” said one man.

Another agreed but said that, realistically, it’s not something that would happen soon. This Redditor wrote, “That will never be the case, unfortunately, when the politicians are busy gurgling companies sweaty-a** nuts for some money on the side and maybe a bit of campaign funding. The system is bound to crash and burn, in my opinion; just a matter of time. Eat the rich. Until people realize that it’s not white versus black, gay versus Christian, or any other little sideshow, these f****** got us fixated on the rich will always win.”

What do you think? Do you believe OP has a fighting chance should she sue her employer?

With the many places I’ve been to, I found that love, inspiration, and happiness are some things that bring people together. No matter how different we are on the outside, I’m a true believer that our emotions don’t lie; if you dig deep into our psyche, we’re all the same inside.

This belief was further amplified when I joined Quote Ambition. Through the quotes I’ve read, collected, organized, and written about, I found that humans are resilient, creative, and compassionate.
