This Redditor came home to a slew of messages from her cousin blaming her for endangering her child. But there’s no one else to blame apart from her and her entitlement!
A Much-Awaited Camping Trip
OP (Original Poster) and her husband had been planning to go on a camping trip before summer ended. So, they left Thursday, September 7, 2023, to experience the “glorious” warm weather before it was replaced with the cold.
They weren’t at home and had no cell reception where they were, so they were completely cut off from the outside world.
The couple was there for five days, only going home the following Monday, September 11.
What an Irresponsible Mom!
What they didn’t know was that while they were enjoying their trip, all hell broke loose at home.
This is because OP’s entitled cousin left her baby—OP’s niece—still strapped in her car seat outside her house’s door on Friday, September 8.
Out of Coverage Area
It turns out that her cousin had sent some messages informing her about leaving her niece with her.
However, OP wrote, “Remember, I had no cell reception where I was camping. I would never have known while I was gone.”
OP only saw her cousin’s messages after they returned home. What made it worse was that her cousin wasn’t “requesting” or “asking” if she could help her watch her niece.
Instead, her cousin was simply “notifying” her that she left her niece at her front door. She only told OP she left a bag with her stuff for the weekend.
In No Way Was She Responsible
OP also added that her cousin never asked her beforehand if she could help babysit.
She wrote, “There was no possible way for me to know. Even if I knew, I would have still declined unless it was a medical emergency in the family and they had no other choice.”
All Alone in a Big Place
To make matters worse, OP explained that she lived in a rural area where everyone was on 30-acre plots of land. So, no one even knew her niece was there—all alone and outside.
OP had no clue, and her neighbors had no clue, either.
Someone as small as her niece was “literally abandoned” on her front door until the next day, Saturday, at noon, when her parents came by her house to drop off some of OP’s parcels delivered to their house.
That’s the only time someone saw their niece. If they didn’t come over, then her niece would be left outside alone until she came back!
OP’s parents immediately called her aunt, OP’s cousin’s mom, and had her pick up her granddaughter.
She wrote, “I can only assume that my parents, my aunt, and my grandmother scolded my cousin for leaving my niece at my door.”
All the Blame
The only other messages OP received from her cousin were “very rude” texts and voice messages calling her “irresponsible.”
Her cousin also blamed her for leaving her niece outside and “endangering her.”
OP was so frustrated with everything happening. Her cousin even mentioned that coyotes in her area could have attacked the “helpless infant!”
What Redditors Think
It’s safe to say that Redditors are furious at OP’s cousin. For them, she didn’t deserve to be the child’s mom.
One said, “That child could have died. What if your parents hadn’t come by? Report the kid’s parents.”
Another wrote, “Honestly, I’m impressed the poor thing survived. The mother should absolutely lose custody.”
What’s Wrong With Her?
People couldn’t even decipher what was going through OP’s cousin’s mind for her to do such a thing.
“And honestly, just imagine: she literally left her child on somebody’s doorstep, completely alone, didn’t hand them off to somebody, and just walked away. No parent handles custody exchanges like that,” said one user.
A woman who worked in Child Protection Services said, “I work for CPS, and this is absolutely neglect and abandonment. That child very easily could have died. This is very, very serious. What the f*** is the matter with them? Who just leaves an infant on someone’s doorstep? What the actual f***?”
I Just Wish This Was Fake!
Some Redditors couldn’t believe the story. For them, it was unfathomable for a mom to act this way toward her child, especially an infant so dependent on her.
“I hope this is fake. It seems unimaginable to do this if you did not confirm verbally on top of the person living in a rural area. While still horrid, at least if the home had close neighbors, there would be one safety net that the child would be noticed or heard, and there would be fewer chances of wild animals,” someone said.
This Should Be Her One and Only Chance!
Other users rushed to the comments section to give OP’s cousin a piece of their minds. She was given one chance too many, and if others had a say, they’d 100% report her to the authorities.
A woman wrote, “Neglect is full-on child abuse. It is an unfortunately common form of it, with varying intensity from mild to severe. This situation is so infuriating and so sad. The poor child was sitting cold, hungry, and uncomfortable, strapped in the car seat in a soiled diaper. Not to mention the dangers of the elements and being on the porch, outside, at the mercy of the elements and animals.”
She added, “They should definitely report the cousin to the authorities. What else is going on in that household? Never have I ever left a child without seeing the adult whose care I left them in. This incubator didn’t even wait for a response to a text. So upsetting! They’re so lucky nothing of any lasting damage happened to her. Oh, I’d hate to have to face a judge’s questions if I had done this.”
Do you think OP’s cousin should lose her custody? What do you think about OP’s story?
