Her Neighbor Yelled at Her for Harvesting Her Fruits Before She Could Steal Them. “That’s So Selfish of You; You’re Not the Only One to Like Them,” She Said.

This woman’s fruits always get stolen before she can harvest them. So, one day, she decided to pick them up early in the morning. She not only got the fruits; she also found the thief!

Her Own Land

OP (Original Poster) lives in a very rural area in France and is a farmer. Her land covers a large area, and there is a patch of land bordering their neighborhood road where she planted some plum trees.

She explained that even though it was near the road, it was still fenced. Therefore, it was her land and her trees.

There was an incoming heat wave, so the day this story was posted, OP decided to harvest her Mirabelle plums early.

She wrote, “I decided to go harvest the plums rather early—7 AM—because we have a heat wave here. This variety of plum is hugely popular here in France, especially for jam, but is hard to come by here in the South.”

Missing Fruits

Every year prior, OP would wait for her plums to ripen and grow to a sizable portion. However, she would never get to harvest them because they would always disappear!

She wrote, “I suspected it was someone from the neighborhood but never knew who.”

Getting Her Answers

When she harvested her plums early, though, she got her answer. She was almost done when she saw one of her neighbors walking down the road toward her with a basket.

Then, the second her neighbor saw her harvesting her fruits, she started yelling at OP. Her neighbor screamed, “That is so selfish of you. You’re not the only one to like them, you know. You could at least have left some for the rest of us!”

OP then explained in her post that her neighbor couldn’t have possibly been unaware that she owned the property.

She wrote, “This is a small neighborhood in a small village. She knows. She knows I own the land. She knows I’m a farmer. But she still yelled at me. For harvesting my fruits. On my land.”

People Like Her

OP remained firm and told her neighbor she knew people “like her.” She also said it was why she was getting the plums to make jam.

OP told her neighbor that she should know where the farmers’ market was if she wanted to buy a jar or two.

She was fired up and ensured her neighbor knew not to mess with her fruits again.

OP wrote, “I told her that now that I know it’s her stealing the plums, if they disappear next year, I will press charges for theft and trespassing.”

Redditors’ Thoughts

Users suggested that OP share her discovery with her other neighbors.

“You might start sharing that story with your neighbors. One or more of them may have also experienced ‘missing’ produce,” suggested one Redditor. Another said, “Even if the neighbors haven’t been missing produce, sharing the story is worth it alone for the fact that that b**** would hate it if her reputation were ruined.”

Get To It!

People also told OP to act fast, as her neighbor would likely twist the story in her favor.

This Redditor said, “People like her will start talking, so I will talk first. She will change the story to make her the victim, so OP should get ahead of the problem.” Another agreed, saying, “I just try to ignore people like this, but they always get the first dig in. And then you end up getting attacked by other idiots who believe some bulls*** story they’ve told everyone.”

Precautionary Measures

Some also suggested OP get a CCTV or game camera to watch out for her neighbor or any others who try to sneak in to steal something from her.

One said, “I would recommend that you get a security camera before the next harvest that surveils your trees. Because you know she’ll try to be sneaky next year.” Another wittingly suggested, “The security camera might need power, so it might be convenient to run an electric fence along the road in case one might need to keep scavenging animals out of the field.”

The Audacity

Others couldn’t fathom how entitled the woman was acting.

“The pure audacity of that b****. God d***,” commented one user. Another said, “I really don’t get people like this. I have a pretty impressive collection of roses in my front garden, and I noticed last year that someone was taking roses from one of the really nice plants. When I finally caught them, I gave them a good, ‘What for?’ If they had been nice about it and asked for a rose, I would probably have given them one. But those are my roses that I grow and that I maintain. Why the f*** do people think they can just take them?”

People also suggested some clever ways to get back at her neighbor.

This Redditor said, “Next year, after your harvest, you should invite the other neighbors—who aren’t thieves—to come to harvest the small amount left. Watch the thief’s head explode as everyone else gets some except her.”

What do you think of what OP experienced? Should she press charges right this instant?
