Cosmetic surgery is getting more and more common nowadays. However, is it okay for a nine-year-old girl to go through something like this?
Rucchi is a Japanese mom who runs a YouTube channel about plastic surgery. However, she and her daughter, Micchi, recently became a hot topic!
She was put in the spotlight for being a “toxic parent” because she “encouraged” her nine-year-old daughter to undergo cosmetic surgery.
Getting Plastic Surgery Done
A lot of Asians are known for having monolids, and Rucchi supposedly made her daughter get plastic surgery to have double eyelids.
Rucchi claims that double eyelids are the “standard of beauty,”
Low Risk or High Risk?
Though eyelid surgery is a procedure with relatively low risks, one cannot completely eliminate the possible complications that might arise because of it. Some of these complications include blindness or injury to surrounding eye muscles.
It’s pretty apparent that a mere nine-year-old girl shouldn’t push through with a procedure like this!
She Needs It!
Even with the possible complications, Rucchi insisted her daughter needed the surgery.
She said, “A girl needs double eyelids. I have never seen a girl with monolids who I thought was pretty.”
What Beauty Means
Rucchi had a different set of beliefs regarding the definition of beauty.
Rucchi noted, “If you can endure the pain of plastic surgery, that makes you a beautiful person, in my opinion.”
Her Daughter’s Thoughts
Surprisingly, Micchi agreed with her mom. She said, “I was told my eyes were narrow, so it looked like I was glaring at people. That’s why I wanted to have plastic surgery.”
For many, though, it was evident in her beliefs that her mom influenced her.
Rucchi’s Childhood Trauma
Rucchi’s beliefs on surgery and beauty seem rooted in past trauma. She explained that her mom and sister had “amazing, big eyes,” and everyone else always thought her sister was “much cuter” than her.
Her childhood trauma was then passed on to her daughter.
Rucchi even shelled out around $2,800 to get Micchi the plastic surgery she deemed her daughter needed.
A Scary Time
Given that Micchi was only nine, she admitted the surgery was scary. However, she really couldn’t remember much of it.
On the other hand, Rucchi said that the anesthesia didn’t work, and Micchi “started to panic.”
I’m Making Her Life Easier!
Rucchi admitted to getting plastic surgery done on herself when she was 18 but said she wished she had done it sooner.
She said, “I wanted to make her life easier by conforming to an objective beauty and cuteness standard. If you do it at a young age, you lose your memory of being ugly before. You can make memories of yourself being cute with double eyelids from an early age.”
I Want Her to Get Over It
Rucchi added that she wanted and believed that plastic surgery would positively impact her daughter. She said, “I didn’t want her to grow up with a complex about it; that was my main concern.”
She was sorry that she made her daughter go through a painful experience but was still glad she pushed through with it. After the procedure, she told Micchi, “I’m sorry. Thank you very much; you were so brave.”
Weird Way of Thinking
Micchi didn’t blame her mom for making her go through the procedure. Instead, she thanked her for spending a lot of money to “make her cuter” and even said it made her happier!
Then, Rucchi reiterated that what she did was support Micchi. She noted, “Plastic surgery is a form of support. Plastic surgery is a part of life for girls.”
It Doesn’t Help
However, Tomohiro Suzuki, who studies child psychology and body image at Tokyo Future University, believes that what Rucchi made Micchi do won’t really help her. Instead, it might lead to the opposite of what she intended.
He said, “Even if you have plastic surgery done to get closer to your ideal image, that image might change again over time, and you’ll need surgery again to get you closer to that new image, then you are trapped in a loop, unable to stop getting surgery.”
It’s Social Media’s Fault
The rise of technology certainly helps people in many aspects of life. However, it also allows for negative things to foster, such as one’s negative views of their image and body.
It’s easy to turn to plastic surgery as an “easy way out,” but let’s remember that it’s not always the right solution. Instead, what we should foster is more self-love and self-acceptance.
What People Think
People couldn’t believe that the procedure was even allowed on minors.
One said, “What kind of plastic surgeon agrees to do that to a child? Poor kid. She is beautiful already.” Another noted, “Disgusting! She is only nine years old. What you might consider beautiful, another may not. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the mother is a monster, in my opinion.”
What do you think of what Rucchi pushed her daughter to do? What do you think of this issue?
