Ever since she and her husband bought a new house, her sister-in-law has been there for almost half of the time. Now, she’s slowly taking over her space, and she’s not having it!
Long-Term Lovers

OP (Original Poster) and her husband of the same age married each other a year before she shared this story.
Before that, they had been in a relationship for 10 years, and his family knew about them. OP also went to his sister’s wedding as she was invited and found it a pleasant experience.
Birds of the Same Feather

For some background, OP explained that she grew up to be really social; she’s career-oriented and values education a lot. Her husband is wired the same way, and that’s how they really connect with each other.
The Black Sheep

On the other hand, her sister-in-law has a different perspective. At the very young age of 17, she got married, had her daughter, then divorced 3 years later.
She also decided not to pursue college and lives with her parents in a five-bedroom townhouse. When OP posted this story, her sister-in-law was without a job.
Too Spoiled For Her Own Good

According to OP, her sister-in-law is a “total brat,” and everyone says yes to anything she wants. As an example of her bratty and spoiled nature, OP explained that she had a 3-day wedding in Italy with 120 guests.
OP wrote, “She doesn’t hate me but doesn’t love me either, and the feelings are mutual. We just don’t connect.”
Opening the Doors of Their New Home

Recently, upon posting on Reddit, OP and her husband bought a new house. They threw a housewarming party for his family, and everybody loved their home.
Their place also had an extra guest bedroom for “just in case” circumstances.
Acting Like She Owns It

OP’s sister-in-law “absolutely loved” the house, which she stated about “50 times,” She even said she would move some of her daughter’s things into the extra room.
Her sister-in-law said they had too much space and didn’t want to bring the materials whenever she came.
No Thanks, Sis!

OP didn’t really understand her sister-in-law’s logic and politely declined, reasoning that they have many guests visiting every now and then and that they don’t have extra space for her daughter’s clothes or toys. Her husband’s sister wasn’t happy with that, but OP didn’t care.
Random All-The-Time Visits

After 4 months of buying the house, OP’s sister-in-law has visited them for a total of 53 days! Most of the time, she just pops up unannounced and would say, “I was visiting someone” or “I was in the neighborhood.”
OP asked, “What kind of person would fly from New Mexico to New York to be in the neighborhood?”
A Parasite

Eventually, OP realized that her husband’s sister started putting up her photos and redecorating their guest bedroom, and OP, in her words, “lost her s***.”
She told her husband about the matter, but he believed OP was “overthinking,” saying that his sister was just trying to be friends with OP.
Just Returning What She “Forgot”

When OP’s sister-in-law left their place a week before this story was posted, OP packed a box with all of her things and had it shipped to her address. These items were stuff her sister-in-law conveniently “forgets” in their guest bedroom, which OP knew was not the case.
Why So Angry, Girl?

With what she did, her sister-in-law became absolutely furious and called her and screamed at her.
OP responded, “I told her to stop overreacting and stop considering our house as hers and that she’s no longer welcome.”
Stop This Nonsense!

After that, OP informed her husband about everything and specifically said that she wouldn’t entertain his sister anymore. He agreed and told his sister she needed to stop doing such a thing, or she would no longer be welcome at their home.
A Brat Gaining Sympathy

However, OP’s sister-in-law started to involve her in-laws and “literally” every person they know and told them OP and her husband were being “a**holes.” However, to OP, her sister-in-law is just obsessed with the “idea” of living in New York.
OP wrote, “Our phones have been buzzing with texts and calls saying how inconsiderate we are and that what we did was wrong. I told everyone, ‘If you’re so interested, keep her in your house and stop bothering me.’ Am I the a**hole?”
What Redditors Have to Say

People commended OP for what she did and agreed that her sister-in-law’s behavior was beyond unacceptable. They suggested OP and her husband set some boundaries to prevent that from happening again.
The top commenter said, “I think shipping her stuff she ‘forgot’ was brilliant. Not the a**hole because her showing up without advanced notice isn’t okay, but you and your spouse should probably chat and get on the same page for boundaries with family.”
Way Out of Line

According to Redditors, OP was in the right here, and her bratty sister-in-law just couldn’t accept rejection.
A Redditor stated, “Not the a**hole. You set a reasonable boundary. She pole vaulted over it while giving you the finger and tattled because she’s the center of the known universe, and you weren’t falling in line.”
Someone replied to the previous comment, saying, “I wouldn’t even call it boundary. It’s just common sense! What’s her plan, after all? Move her stuff in little by little until ‘Oops! I guess I live here too?’ That would require OP to be the perfect doormat to work. It’s amazing that anyone could come up with such a dumb plan! Not the a**hole.”
Sister-In-Law’s Schemes

Some people think OP’s husband’s sister might be planning to either leave her daughter with them or live with them along with her kid.
“Not the a**hole. My best guess is that she’s low-key trying to set the room up for your niece. Then she’ll surprise dump the poor girl on you, and your sister-in-law will go live her best child-free party lifestyle,” one person said.
Another one commented, “Maybe she plans to dump the kid. But I’d just say it’s just as likely that she wants to move in, along with the kid as well! She’s been there 57 days out of the last 120. That’s absolutely insane.”
What do you think of OP’s story? Was she wrong for telling her sister-in-law she was no longer invited into their home?
