This Redditor accidentally found out that her sister’s a freeloader, so she doesn’t want to pay their parents for rent either. Is her decision justified?
Paying Rent

OP (Original Poster) graduated from college 4 years ago and has been paying her parents $800 monthly for rent. Her sister graduated from college two years ago and is also living with their parents.
They both got jobs almost straight out of college.
Family’s Financial Problems

The night before this story was posted, OP overheard her parents discussing their financial problems. They were talking in the living room loudly, so OP overheard.
Offering to up Her Rent

Wanting to help, she offered to pay $100 to $200 more since it covers utilities, internet, and other bills. OP’s parents were grateful for the gesture and thanked her.
Accidentally Uncovering the Truth

Prior to this conversation, OP never asked how much her sister pays for rent. She always assumed that they paid the same amount.
However, this time, she absent-mindedly asked how much her sister paid and was in for a shock!
No Contribution—at All

When she asked, her mom said her sister paid nothing. She couldn’t believe what she heard and asked what it meant.
Her dad then got angry and said, “Your sister doesn’t pay a f*****g thing!”
Dad’s Frustrations

He said that her sister bought a car but didn’t pay insurance, leaving OP’s dad to cover those expenses, too.
OP shared in her post, “She doesn’t pay rent. She doesn’t pay utilities, phone—anything. So for the past two years, she’s been living rent-free while I’ve been paying my parents.”
Having a Serious Talk

Later that night, the whole family gathered, sat down, and discussed the situation. During this conversation, they asked OP’s sister to pay rent, but she adamantly refused, especially given how much OP currently pays.
She offered to pay $100, and their parents suggested she pay $300 while OP continued paying $800. OP and her sister both disagreed!
Trying to Live Her Life

Their conversation ended with OP’s sister getting angry and shouting, “F**k you. I’m trying to live my life.” This no doubt angered OP, too.
“Massively Unfair” Situation

Her sister left, and OP was upset because everything about the issue was “massively unfair.”
Their mom was also upset because everyone was angry at one another. Then, their dad was mad that OP’s sister refused to pay rent and didn’t want to move out.
Putting Her Foot Down

Before leaving the room, OP wanted to make things clear with her parents. She said she would only pay rent once her sister did, and they will pay the same amount.
Her mom suggested the same thing as earlier and said her sister would pay $300, and she would pay $800. OP rejected the idea and told her mom, “That’s too bad,” when her mom told her they needed the money.
The Next Morning

When she woke up the next day, her dad was angry at her. She shared in the post, “My dad comes in and tells me that I’m an a**hole for not paying rent—that I should pay rent because it’s the right thing to do and all this s**t.”
OP also got mad and said that her parents should make her sister pay rent.
Arguing With Her Parents

OP’s mom was also listening in and told her that her sister wouldn’t listen to them, and again, OP wouldn’t stand down.
Her mom angrily said, “We wouldn’t have this problem if you didn’t try to make your sister pay rent.”
Everyone’s Still Boiling Mad

OP slammed the door on her parents. Then, after a while, she heard them talking in the living room about “how both their children are rotten, and s**t was better back in the home country—back in their day when kids listened to their parents.”
Redditors’ Mixed Reactions

Some Redditors backed OP up and said she wasn’t wrong to react this way. However, a good number also said everyone’s an a**hole in this story.
You Did the Right Thing!

Those who think OP did the right thing agree that it was unfair for OP’s parents to let her sister not pay a penny and also for her sister to think she could do what she wanted.
Someone said, “Your parents are being ridiculous, and your sister is a user. How financially difficult would it be for you to leave? I wouldn’t want to stay with them if it was me.”
You Better Move Out!

On the other hand, people who believed that everyone did something wrong in the story suggested it would be better if OP moved out of the house.
A Redditor shared, “If she can pay up to $1,000 a month for rent and she’s throwing a fit like this, then she needs to grow the hell up and move out. Yeah, it’s not fair, but stop complaining and take action. The parents and sister are obviously more the a**hole than OP, but she’s not innocent in this either.”
What Do You Think?

Who do you think is wrong? Is OP’s action justified?
