OP’s (Original Poster) grandmother’s entitled neighbor approached her, asking for some family heirlooms when her grandma passed away. The funny thing is, he isn’t even family!
Let the Illness Be
When OP’s grandmother was diagnosed with cancer, she decided not to get any treatment. She had seen what her husband went through with chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery; he was miserable the whole time, and she didn’t want this for herself.
Given her decision, her family wholly supported her.
Gifts From Their Grandma
Throughout the following year, OP’s grandmother gifted things to her family and friends. She told them to write their names on the items they wanted and take whatever they desired.
For Family Members Only!
However, they weren’t allowed to have the family heirlooms meant for her children and grandchildren. Everyone in the family knew what those items were and who they were meant for, so it was quickly settled after OP’s grandmother died.
OP’s father inherited her grandmother’s house. But all of a sudden, two weeks after her grandma’s passing, her dad unexpectedly died.
It was unfortunate, but OP inherited the house.
Gone Are Her Loved Ones
Everything happened a little over 10 years ago, and while she and her family had prepared themselves for her grandma’s passing, her dad’s sudden death shocked them to the core.
OP wrote, “He was my best friend, and I feel his loss almost daily.”
Here Comes the Neighbor
Two weeks after her father’s death, the next-door neighbor, Todd, came to the house. He was upset that he and his 19 and 21-year-old kids weren’t invited to her grandmother’s funeral.
There Was Nothing but Grief
However, in OP’s defense, no funeral was held for her grandmother. Their family had prepared for it, but her father’s death was so sudden and devastating that they couldn’t endure it.
Todd also complained about not being shown a copy of her grandmother’s will, which only included family members. Todd told her that he “knew” her grandma “loved his kids like her own,” which, in truth, she didn’t.
OP wrote, “She complained about them coming over all the time, stealing her water to fill their pool, and she had to tell them to stop calling her grandma.”
No Sense of Shame
Todd also wanted to know if OP would allow his kids to go through the house and see if there’s anything they’d like to take to remember her grandmother by, which she thought to be awfully rude. She wrote, “Okay, first, dude, my grandma died four weeks ago. And, dude, my dad died two weeks ago.”
Even so, she offered to let them go through the donation boxes she had packed. However, she was surprised when Todd was “mortified” and “offended.”
No, You Can’t Have It
He told OP that his kids had their “hearts set” on some family heirlooms. When Todd said this, OP laughed.
She explained that since they were family heirlooms, she would keep them. The rest of the items were already with her brother.
Is He Even Family?
After what OP told him, Todd said, “My kids were her family, and she would have gifted those to them.”
Todd also insisted that his kids should have been present when they were dividing everything else up.
They’re Just Annoying Neighbors
However, OP wanted to clarify that none of her family members even knew Todd and his kids other than being “the neighbors next door.” They were also never even present at any family gatherings held at her grandma’s house.
OP noted, “The only time I ever heard her talk about them was when she was complaining about them, especially when she caught them using both her hoses to fill up their pools and then came over complaining because she had put locks on the outdoor faucets.”
Out of the Picture
In an edit, OP explained that it wasn’t the first time Todd brought up the subject; he came over twice before, and OP was not 100% sure what his intentions were. She did, however, say, “The first two times were eyebrow-raising hints where I walked away, not really sure if I was interpreting his words correctly.”
However, this incident was the end of it, and he never brought it up again after OP told him that he couldn’t have the items he wanted. Fortunately, Todd’s house was in foreclosure, and he moved away a year after the incident.
The Community’s Suggestions
The people of Reddit were absolutely annoyed with OP’s neighbor and the nerve that he had to complain and demand things.
A Redditor said, “I would have slowly shut the door on him, making extremely uncomfortable eye contact with a twitch in my left eye.”
Another one suggested, “Kids don’t get their hearts set on inheriting things. This was a grifter hoping to get something to pawn.”
Some Redditors even shared their personal experiences with people like Todd and how people could be extremely greedy when it came to money and material things.
“I’ve seen this happen a few times. A relative or loved one starts to go downhill, and the vultures appear. My family was shocked to have so many long-lost relatives! Lucky for you, she had her facilities because, in a lot of cases, the vultures end up with everything,” a commenter wrote.
Another Redditor added to the previous comment by sharing their experience, “It happened with my family. My aunts and uncles barely talked to my grandmother, but as soon as they realized how serious her health was, they came scavenging. Before she even died, they took her dishwasher, microwave, and some furniture. I couldn’t believe how awful they acted, but now I know.”
What are your thoughts? If you were OP, what would you do?
