OP (Original Poster) lost her biological dad when she was very young. Her mom then got together with her stepdad, Lee, when she was five.
She shared that Lee was wealthy, so her mom never had to work again. She also didn’t have to want for anything while growing up.
The Bigger Picture
However, even when the three were happy, Lee’s family never entirely OP and her mom. She shared, “The only thing we never received was acceptance from Lee’s family—they were not pleased that Lee chose to marry a widow with a child.”
The Perfect Stepdad
Although that’s the case, Lee didn’t let his family sway his feelings for OP. So, OP shared that she and Lee had always been close, and he continued to care for her even when her half-brother, Sam, who was now 18, was born.
On the flip side, OP’s mom favored Sam and didn’t focus much on her anymore.
Disparity Between Siblings
Apart from OP’s mom treating her poorly, Lee’s relatives continued pretending she didn’t exist. They slowly warmed up to her mom after Sam was born, but the same did not happen for her.

Leaving Home
When it was time for OP to go to university, she chose to go somewhere out of the country. Lee supported her and even gave her enough money so she didn’t have to worry about her finances.
During her time away from home, OP only talked to her mom and half-brother once every couple of months. On the other hand, Lee regularly called or wrote to check up on her.
Can You Come Home?
Finally, OP graduated, and Lee wanted her to come home. However, she wanted to continue staying abroad.

Family Visits
Then, the pandemic struck, and OP was stuck where she was, and her family couldn’t visit. When restrictions relaxed, Lee, her mom, and her Sam visited once and left when she said she preferred to work there.

Passing On
A few months before this story was posted, Lee sadly passed away from an illness he chose to keep from his family. He also left a will detailing where his money and assets would go.
Lee’s Will
In his will, he left his businesses, house, and most valuables to his relatives. Surprisingly, her mom was left with almost nothing, though OP said she could keep what she already had—two cars, jewelry, and cash that was around $60,000.
Sam was left with $150,000, but the rest was left to OP. It was a seven-figure amount; she said it was “life-changing.”
The Truth
It turns out that Sam was not Lee’s biological son, and he found out about it shortly before he passed. Even so, OP’s mom and half-brother were mad and demanded that OP give them some of the money Lee left her.
Her Refusal
However, OP didn’t want to give them a dime. Instead, she offered to put the money in low-risk investments, and then they could split the gain—the two refused.
They told her that that was not good enough for them. OP’s mom and half-brother each wanted at least 25% of the inheritance.
Not Giving In
OP was unconvinced that they deserved or needed the money and said, “I argued that it’s not like they are left destitute.”
She continued, saying Sam had enough money for a good university. On the other hand, her mom had enough to get her own place and make some investments for a long-term income.
