OP’s (Original Poster) father had her a little late in life, which sadly meant she lost him sooner. Her dad wasn’t incredibly wealthy, but he did have some money in his name, so there was a “decent” inheritance.
Of that, 50% went to her mother. Then, she and her paternal half-sister each got 25%.
Wise Decisions
Though sisters, she and her half-sister had different views on money and finances.
OP put half of her inheritance in the bank and the other half as a downpayment on a house, which allowed her to become a homeowner early.
High-Risk Type
On the other hand, OP’s half-sister and her then-boyfriend used her inheritance on a business idea: a store for high-end, second-hand children’s clothing. This is where expensive brands of clothes that kids grow out of can be resold for a good margin.
OP’s half-sister immediately rented a shop on a high-end street for this business, which cost a lot of money. Unfortunately, it failed.
Another Failed Business
After that, OP’s half-sister and her then-boyfriend broke up, and she used the money on another business venture that also didn’t work out. This time, it was focused on organic body care, such as shampoo barks and bamboo toothbrushes.
OP wrote, “To her credit, she did try to do it from home, learning from past mistakes. It just never really took off in the sense it could support her fully. And she did pay quite a bit for the initial investment in products.”
Raising Her Child Alone
What’s worse is that after she and her then-boyfriend broke up, she found out she was pregnant and decided to be a single mom. In less than five years, she basically blew all her money.
A Bit of This and a Bit of That
A year and a half ago, before OP posted this story, her half-sister started asking her for small loans. At first, it was for her daughter’s, Mona’s, school supplies.
Then, she borrowed money for her car, and so on. Overall, OP “loaned” her half-sister about $528 and never saw any of it back.
Payment First
Then, her half-sister suddenly asked her for another loan shortly before OP posted this story. However, OP told her that she wouldn’t give her an “extra cent” until she returned what she initially borrowed.
This was when all hell broke loose, and “s*** hit the fan!”
Victimizing Herself
OP’s half-sister said that it was “unfair.” After all, she has a daughter to care for, and OP doesn’t need the money as much as she does.
She also mentioned that OP will inherit more “once her mom dies” because she’s her only child.
A Low Blow
She said she felt she should get more of the inheritance because she has Mona, and OP pretty much laughed at that. She told her half-sister she was being “ridiculous” and “rude,” having brought up her mother—especially in that way—in the conversation.
OP added, “I told her that her bad finances are a direct result of her bad life choices and that she’s getting nothing. I said that she has no legal claim to anything, which is true, and I still expect that $528 back.”

After that, OP’s half-sister started crying on the phone, but she just hung up. OP might have been harsh, but she still feels the situation was entirely caused by her half-sister’s own actions.
