She Refused to Give Up Her Seat to an Elderly Woman Because She Has a Prosthetic Leg. Her Mom Said She Was “Rude” and That Her Disability’s “Her Fault”

This user had her leg amputated and was riding on a public bus. She argued with one of the other riders, and when she got home, her mom blamed her for everything.

A Rough Start

OP (Original Poster) is an 18-year-old woman who was run over by a car when she was 6, which left her in a coma for a month, and she had to have one of her legs amputated. Her parents each blamed the other, and by the time she woke up, she had no leg, and her parents were separated and getting divorced.

When she was younger, she and her brothers were allowed to play on their street and go to the other houses since they lived on a quiet street that was a dead end. She had seen one of her friends come home and had asked if she could go to her house, to which her mother said yes.

Since their dead-end street was quiet, they ignored their etiquette when crossing the street. Even though OP and her brothers had learned to look both ways, they rarely did.

The only traffic on the road was their neighbors and occasional friends who would stop by. It was a great place to raise children; she and her brothers could move freely as long as they asked before crossing the street.

A Tragic Misstep

When OP’s mom told her she could play with her friend, she crossed the road by stepping out between two parked cars. She didn’t remember everything but did remember her friend’s mom screaming her name and had heard what happened afterward.

A young man who was the son of one of her neighbors and lived at home while he was going to college was coming home. He was driving the speed limit but had no time to stop since she darted out between parked cars, and he hadn’t seen her in time.

No One to Blame

All the witnesses, her brother, neighbor, friend, etc., confirmed to the police that it wasn’t the driver’s fault. No one got in trouble for the accident, and OP had never blamed anyone for what happened.

Life Goes On

Once her parents had divorced, her mother had custody, and they would go to her father’s every other weekend. Her brothers, who were four and seven at the time, blamed her for their parent’s divorce, but once they got older and recovered from the shock, they apologized to her.

A Secret Guilt

OP had thought it was all over, but she discovered that her mom still harbored ill will towards her. It all started when she took the public bus to school one day.

Due to her injury, OP had a prosthetic leg that helped her get around and function independently. The journey to school was busy, but most people knew her since the same crowd used the bus every day, and people would offer their seats because she had trouble balancing while standing on the moving bus.

An Open Seat

On this particular day, a seat was open for disabled and older people, so OP took it. The woman beside her, who seemed to be in her late 50s, told her she shouldn’t sit there because she was young and healthy.

OP ignored the woman and didn’t respond, though her brother and school friends told the older woman that she did need the disabled seat.

Nothing to Prove

When the friend of the older woman got on the bus, the older woman told OP to move, and OP refused. Her friends told the woman that she was wrong and that OP was disabled, and her brother even told her she should show the woman her leg.

OP refused to show her because she didn’t think it was fitting that disabled people got harassed for not being “visibly disabled.” She had suffered harassment before, and this time, she wasn’t going to take it; she was staying seated.

A Helping Hand

The bus driver had to get involved, and the woman had to leave OP alone, which she refused to do. This situation eventually led to the woman getting kicked off, despite her friend realizing what was happening and asking her to calm down.

When she got back home, she told her mom about it, and her mom told her she was “being rude” and should have given up the seat. She told OP that she hadn’t been born disabled and that it was her own “fault for acting stupidly” that she had gotten hurt.

The Gates Opened

OP had heard the story before and knew the driver had helped her even though she was unconscious. She knew the accident was her fault but felt she had suffered enough.

Still, the floodgates were open, and her mom just kept going. She told OP that if she hadn’t been so stupid, she would still have a leg, and her mom would still have a husband.

The Real Guilt

OP had always felt guilty about the accident, even though she would reassure herself that her parent’s divorce wasn’t her fault. No one blamed her, and her father had told her that she had nothing to do with the accident.

OP couldn’t believe her mother had said that, and her mom even reacted in shock, clamping her hand over her mouth and starting to apologize. OP didn’t want to hear it and went to her room crying before she called her dad to come pick her up.

The Fight Continues

She had told her dad everything, and by the time she finished packing, she could hear yelling. Her dad had laid into her mom about what she had said, and her mom was crying.

Her mom tried to tell her she couldn’t leave, but OP told her she was 18 and could leave if she wanted. She then moved in with her dad but felt terrible for making her mom cry.

The Community’s Two Cents

Redditors were very much on OP’s side, and many couldn’t believe what her mom had said.

The top comment was horrified, saying, “Not the a**hole. No, no, no, this is not your fault. You were six. It is frickin horrendous for your mother to say that, and unfortunately, the sad part is that there’s a non-zero chance this is the mentality she’s been carrying for years. Your mom needs therapy. She is the adult, and you are the child. Her actions were extremely s*****. It sucks that you upset her, but sometimes people need to be called out when they do s***** things.”

Another commenter weighed in, saying, “Not the a**hole. Your mother should have gotten therapy a long time ago. A six-year-old shouldn’t suffer fault for acting like a six-year-old. The accident is not your fault. And the end of a relationship between two adults is not a child’s fault. Ever. I’m glad you have your father. It sounds like you’ve been allowed to carry the guilt from both events for far too long. I hope you can access therapy as well. You deserve better.”

An Uncertain Ending

Redditors did their best to reassure OP that her mom had said and done things that were not okay.

One summed up a lot of the comments by saying, “Nope. Your mom blames you for her mistakes and thinks you deserve to be harassed on the bus by strangers. She’s terrible.”

Do you think OP did the right thing by moving in with her father? What would you have done in her place?
