This Redditor knew how to hold a grudge, especially when her kids were on the line. So, she made sure her selfish sister-in-law knew she wouldn’t readily help her, even when she could!
A Tough Start
OP (Original Poster) has been married to her husband, Joe, for eight years. They have two kids together and another one on the way.
However, though they were living in bliss now, OP could never forget the struggles they had to overcome in the beginning.
On the Verge of Homelessness
When she was pregnant with her twins, she was put on bed rest very early in the pregnancy. She lost her job, and after that, she and her husband struggled horribly because of the lost income.
OP was the breadwinner, and without her salary, everything just started falling apart.
Begging for Help
When OP was 33 weeks pregnant, they ended up homeless. So, they begged her sister-in-law, OP’s husband’s sister, to let them stay with her.
They feared they’d lose their twin boys when the state found out about their financial problems. The boys would be taken away because the couple was homeless and living in their minivan.
Living a Comfortable Lifestyle
When this was happening, OP’s sister-in-law had three extra bedrooms. She inherited the house when her father died.
It was fully paid off, and she just had to pay $480 annually for land tax.
You’d think OP’s sister-in-law would readily take them in, but no. She pushed them away for “multiple reasons.”
OP wrote, “She felt uncomfortable with people in her space, her husband doesn’t like company, etc.” She noted that her sister-in-law was the only one who could have helped them then, but she refused.
An Essential Piece of the Story
OP then explained that she wasn’t saying her sister-in-law’s reasons weren’t justified. However, given what she was doing now, saying “family needs to help family,” she felt like it was important to mention.
Doing What They Can
When OP gave birth, she and her husband “lied heavily” to the state about their whereabouts and living arrangements. They lived in their minivan for three weeks after she had her twins.
During this time, OP and her husband “took the plunge,” knowing that there was a big chance they would fail, and started their own businesses.
A New Direction
OP started reselling, and her husband started power washing services.
She wrote, “Within the first month of busting our a**** to the bone, we got into an apartment. A year later, we were able to buy a house.”
Unexpected but Positive Outcome
Now OP owns her own store, and her husband’s services have grown into his own cleaning company. They make more than they ever thought was possible, considering where they were just a few years ago.
However, despite their current financial stability, OP’s resentment toward her sister-in-law never disappeared.
Rants and Requests
The day before this story was posted, OP and her family were at her mother-in-law’s house. During their visit, her sister-in-law talked to everyone about her financial issues.
She shared that her house was now in foreclosure because she had failed to pay her land tax for the past six years.
OP’s sister-in-law suddenly turned to them and directly asked them how much they could give to help her. She also asked the rest of their relatives the same thing.
However, OP flat-out said, “I’m not helping.”
Her sister-in-law asked her why she wouldn’t help when she had the money to do so. In turn, OP said, “And you had the ability to help us not be homeless with the twins, and you didn’t. So no, I’m not helping. My husband can. I refuse.”
Undeserving of Her Good Graces
Upon her refusal, she said OP was being “petty” and “selfish.” She also told OP that the situation was different since she was “better off” than her.
OP wrote, “But I still refuse, and so does my husband. I don’t feel she is deserving of my help.”
Insights From Redditors
Redditors couldn’t believe OP’s sister-in-law’s audacity and selfishness.
A top commenter said, “Not the a**hole! She deserves a taste of her own medicine. Who allows two newborn babies to be homeless? Especially her nephews. This is her karma.”
Another commented, “Not the a**hole, and you’re being generous in saying your husband can. I’d be mad if he gave them any after they left you homeless.”
Her House, Her Responsibility
People also pointed out the fact that OP’s sister-in-law was quite irresponsible to lose her house, especially since she was lucky enough to only be required to pay $480 annually.
One user wrote, “Not the a**hole. But to lose a house after not paying less than $500 per year for 6 years is just stupid as hell. She can’t take a second job and come up with $3,000 to settle the debt?”
“I was going to say, you can’t somehow come up with $3,000 for something that important? Even if you don’t have the means, most adults have some assets they can sell to come up with cash if they need,” wrote one Redditor.
Do you think OP should help her sister-in-law? What would you do if you were in her shoes?
