This Redditor is a bride-to-be who faced backlash from her family when she told them about her preferences for her wedding. They think she’s selfish, but is she really?
Start of Her Happily Ever After

OP (Original Poster) is a 27-year-old who will soon get married to the man of her dreams. They have spent over a year planning their wedding, and soon, everything will come to life!
A Roadblock on the Path Toward Their Happy Ending

Almost everything about their wedding is ready to go. However, the couple recently encountered an issue causing some uproar in their families.
Meet James and Max

OP has an 18-year-old nephew named James. He has severe anxiety and panic attacks, so he never goes anywhere without his service dog, Max.
Max is well-trained and well-behaved, and OP knows how much help he has been for her nephew.
The Issue

The problem is that OP is severely allergic to dogs! She can have a severe allergic reaction by just being around them for long periods.
She said her family is also aware of this issue.
Strict Rules

Because of the possible severe consequences OP might face if she comes in contact with a dog, she and her soon-to-be husband were pretty strict with the invites.
They explicitly mentioned that no pets would be allowed during the event.
An Exemption?

Her nephew, James, and his parents approached the couple to ask if Max could be an exemption to the couple’s no pets policy. After all, they said that, “He is a service dog and not just a pet.”
They also assured OP that Max would be on his best behavior and would 100% not cause any problems.
Unfortunately, It’s a No-Go

OP understands how much Max means to James. However, she is also aware of the severe complications she might face if she gives in.
It’s My Wedding Day!

For OP, her wedding day is one of the happiest days of her life. She doesn’t want to risk having an allergic reaction during the ceremony and the reception.
She tried to put things into perspective for James and his parents and explained her side. OP also offered to provide alternative accommodation for Max during the wedding.
Is She or Is She Not in the Wrong

Since the issue has blown up, OP has received mixed feedback from her family. While some understood and empathized with her, others said she was “selfish and inconsiderate.”
OP understands that James is upset about everything, and she also feels bad. But she simply can’t give in.
The Community’s Comments

For Redditors, there’s nothing more important than a bride’s presence at her wedding!
A top comment goes, “Sorry, nephew, but in a showdown between your attendance and the bride being able to breathe at her own wedding, the bride wins.”
Give Them a Piece of Your Mind

A Redditor also gave OP a witty way of replying to her family about the issue.
He said, “Reply to the family, ‘So you are asking me, the bride, to miss my wedding?’ Any answer they give, ‘You are saying I’m not important—that a guest is more important than me—on my wedding day.’”
I Feel Your Pain

Allergies are pretty common, and there are people with severe reactions and those with mild ones.
One Redditor who said she knows how it feels to have deadly allergic reactions says, “As someone with deadly allergies people often downplay, not the a**hole one bit. It’s important for the bride to breathe at her wedding.”
What About the Other Family Members?

Some people think it was wrong for James and his family to try to be an exemption, but for Redditors, the people who really did wrong are the ones who caused OP stress and called her names about an issue she can’t control.
A person said, “They are a**holes for causing drama and stress over the situation rather than graciously accepting that the dog’s presence is completely unreasonable. She’s the bride. If she gets sick partway through the ceremony, she can’t just leave to get some fresh air; her presence is absolutely required.”
A Service Dog Is Still a Dog

Redditors also have much to say about the part where OP’s family members argue that Max is not just a pet.
A commenter shares, “Being a service dog does not change the fact that Max is still a dog.”
Do You Have Other Suggestions?

How else could OP solve this issue? What do you have to say to her family members who called her names?
