This soon-to-be mom found out her husband lied and suggested his ex-girlfriend’s name for their baby girl. There are five weeks left until her due date; what should she do?
35 Weeks Pregnant
OP (Original Poster) and her husband will soon become first-time parents. They were very excited when they learned they were having a baby girl.
Naming Her Tiffany
Upon learning the gender, OP’s husband suggested they name her Tiffany, and OP immediately fell in love with the idea. She agreed and asked her husband where he got the name from.
He told her he heard it while watching a movie, and it stuck with him. OP didn’t think much of her husband’s answer.
A few days before this story was posted, OP talked to her sister-in-law, and the topic of names came up. Her sister-in-law mentioned how she was surprised that OP agreed to the name her husband suggested because “she’d never want to name her child after her husband’s high school girlfriend.”
Trying to Explain
OP was confused; she didn’t know what her sister-in-law was talking about. So, she asked her what she meant.
She wrote, “She told me that my husband dated a girl named Tiffany from 10th grade until they were juniors in college.”
What She Knew
OP said she knew her husband had a long relationship in high school and college. But she was never made aware of the girl’s name.
Making Her Upset
She was visibly upset because of what her sister-in-law just told her. Her sister-in-law had assumed that OP’s husband told her where he got the name from.
OP then shared that her husband said he heard it from a movie, which was a blatant lie. She said her husband never said anything about an ex-girlfriend.
Her sister-in-law immediately apologized and said she didn’t mean to upset OP. However, OP wasn’t upset at her sister-in-law; in a way, she was glad she found out about it.
She shared, “I wasn’t upset with her, though. I was and still am so angry at my husband.”
Conversations Between Husband and Wife
OP immediately confronted her husband about the name and asked him if her sister-in-law’s statement was true. At first, her husband tried to dodge the issue and blow it off, but he eventually admitted that it was true.
Why Would You Do That?
He said that the name was pretty and his ex-girlfriend was “such a good person” that he wanted to name their daughter after her.
OP’s husband said he lied because he thought OP wouldn’t agree to it if she knew where the name actually came from.
Never in a Million Years
After arguing back and forth, OP told her husband that she adamantly refused to use the name Tiffany for their baby girl. She did not want to do it, especially after her husband hid things from her.
Not a Big Deal?
OP’s husband tried convincing her that “it wasn’t a big deal.” But it was understandable that it was a big deal to OP, especially since he lied to her about it.
She also didn’t want to look at her daughter daily and remember that she was named after her husband’s ex-girlfriend. It also made her feel like he still loved his ex, even though, as far as she knew, they hadn’t been in contact since they broke up.
Her Husband’s Accusations
Her husband told her she was acting “like a child” and “overreacting.”
He also told her that she couldn’t change her mind about the name now because there were only five weeks until she was due to give birth.
How She Feels
OP is left feeling hurt and betrayed. She doesn’t want to name her daughter after her husband’s ex-girlfriend, but was she genuinely overreacting and being an a**hole about it?
The Community’s Pieces of Advice
Redditors felt bad for OP and asked whether her husband had usually hidden things from her or acted this way before.
A top commenter wrote, “Not the a**hole. If he thought it wouldn’t be an issue that it was his ex-girlfriend’s name, he wouldn’t have lied about it, plain and simple. He deceived you into agreeing to the name, he continued to lie to you when you confronted him, and now he’s trying to force you to keep the name with ridiculous logic—you can’t change your mind five weeks before giving birth? What kind of bulls*** is that? Even if you would have been okay with the name originally had he been honest, now it’s tainted by the fact that he lied to you about it. Is he usually like this?”
Stand Your Ground
For users, it was important for OP to be clear and firm with her husband. They told her she needed to make him aware of what she felt about everything.
“OP, I know how easy it is to make excuses; you’re pregnant, exhausted, and you want to be happy about your new baby! There are plenty of reasons to push this aside and put it off, but you have to make a firm stand and show your husband you won’t be pushed around. As vulnerable as you are now, you’re going to be 100% more vulnerable once you actually have a baby to take care of. I know it’s hard, but it’s important to show him that you mean business,” wrote one Redditor.
He’s a Terrible Husband
Redditors also don’t accept OP’s husband’s reasons for picking the name.
One said, “Don’t back down because he didn’t pick the name just because he liked it. He even said it was because he thought his ex was a good person. He knew he would be reminded of her every single day, every time he looked at or thought about his child. That’s disgusting. I’m sorry. He is being so terrible to you.” Another woman said, “The red flags are just waving in the breeze generated by him running his mouth. The name of the child is not your only issue here. Best of luck.”
What do you think OP should do? What would you tell her husband?
