She Refused to Return Her Wedding Gifts to Her Late Husband’s Family. But Her Mother-In-Law Demanded She Do So, Furious That She’s Already Dating Again Two Years After Her Son’s Death! Was She Wrong?

This Redditor was married to her husband for four years before he passed away. Two years later, she started dating again, and that’s when her mother-in-law demanded she return all of her wedding gifts!

Difficult Parents

OP (Original Poster) was with her husband for nine years and had been married to him for four years at the time of his passing.

Her husband had always stated he “never had a great relationship” with his parents and was very vocal about that to their mutual friends.

Financial Secrets

OP and her husband kept their finances private and didn’t share much information with his parents; he was always adamant that he didn’t want them involved.

On the flip side, his parents are “decently well-off” and are fully capable of providing for themselves.

The Nice Parents

Both OP and her husband got along considerably better with her parents. They would “openly share finances” with her parents and also received “financial help” from them on more than one occasion.

They had never asked her husband’s parents for help “at any time,” though.

Building a Life Together

OP and her husband had also purchased a home together when they were just engaged.

Because OP had some “legal issues,” her husband’s parents had to sign a document as she and her husband didn’t have a “living will.”

Bad Aftertaste

His mother “hesitated” and kept making “snarky comments” about the car OP drove and the shoes she’d buy.

Though it was all eventually resolved, the process ultimately left OP with a “bitter feeling.”

Greed Disguised as Grief

After her husband’s passing, his parents waited to see if their names were listed as “beneficiaries” for any of the accounts OP and her husband had. After it was confirmed they weren’t, they stopped contacting OP entirely.

They didn’t reach out to OP once for two straight years.

Burgeoning Feelings

Over the past year, OP has now begun to see someone new. As soon as her deceased husband’s parents found out, they expressed that they were “clearly not happy.”

Their mentality shifted to a “why should she have anything from our son” narrative. On the heels of this drama, OP’s mother also passed away.

Then, her deceased husband’s parents did something truly outrageous. They called OP and demanded that she give back “all the wedding jewelry” she had received as presents at her wedding.

OP noted that “nothing given” by the guests or his family had been “family heirlooms” or “passed down jewelry” that would have had “sentimental value.” Everything they’d received was just regular gifts from those who attended the wedding, so his mother had zero claim over any of it.

False Accusations

His parents had also not bothered to show up to OP’s mother’s funeral or even call her to give their condolences.

Beyond that, they also started claiming that the home OP and her husband had purchased wasn’t even truly “hers” as they believed “their son had put the down payment.”

Ignorance Is Bliss

These assumptions from his parents were all untrue, OP noted, as her parents had helped them put a “large amount” of the down payment for the home. However, her husband had never shared this fact with his parents since he didn’t want to “rub it in their faces.”

They also had the false belief that their son had “funded everything” for her lifestyle, which wasn’t accurate since both she and her husband had worked and built a life together using their combined income.

OP said that from her perspective, she and her husband had both worked and built a life together, so all of the wedding gifts or things purchased using their combined income don’t belong to his parents in any way.

Constant Harassment

Since that initial phone call, OP said that her deceased husband’s mother has been harassing and calling her family. His mom even went so far as to question OP’s “upbringing” that her dead mother gave her.

OP noted that all of her family members think his parents are “disgusting” for doing this to their son’s widow, but that everything is also “awkward” as she and her family try to be “mindful” that they lost their son.

Redditors’ Two Cents

The community was stunned at how horrible OP’s deceased husband’s parents were and stood firmly on her side.

One user said, “Time to go no contact. No kids for the old mother-in-law to claim, so she has no claim on your life. There is now no reason to stay in contact. If their love for you does not continue because their son died, then you would not be in the wrong to cut these people out of your life. You owe them nothing.”

“And if that doesn’t work, get a restraining order or sue for harassment, etc., whatever you need to make them stop. Or if it’s easier, change numbers, etc. Not the a**hole. Your wedding gifts were gifts for your wedding, which happened, so the gifts are yours. End of story,” added another commenter.

Questionable Motives

Many other Redditors had concerns over the parents’ motives.

“What did they expect you to do, stay single and mourn forever? Sounds like they were resentful from the start and just wanted an excuse to swoop in and attempt to reclaim your inheritance. Blocking them was the right move, and the next step should be a cease and desist if they keep harassing you,” said one user.

Another commented, “Lawyer, lawyer, lawyer. Your mother-in-law, in particular, is harassing you and making false claims of ownership of your marital assets. I have no idea where you live, but look at the laws regarding marital property and intestacy to see what your legal rights are. Have an estate lawyer send your mother-in-law a cease and desist and spell out what the law says regarding any rights she may have—be fair and keep everything above board—which is probably zero. Your mother-in-law sounds like a hot mess. So sorry you have had two horrible losses in such a short period of time.”

What do you think of OP’s predicament? Should she go no contact with her husband’s family?
