This Redditor is confused about what she should do because her mother-in-law is an awful tenant, and her husband isn’t helping at all. If she can’t pay rent, then she might as well just go!
Property Owners

OP (Original Poster) and her husband have been married for two years. They are new homeowners of a multi-unit building since April of 2023, and she noted that the property is in her name.
They lived in one unit, while her mother-in-law lived in another.
Mom’s the New Neighbor

Before everything transpired, OP’s husband vouched for his mother, saying she has always been a “good tenant.” They never had issues with her in the past, and OP thought it would be great to live with family in the same building.
OP’s mother-in-law then signed a lease and moved in during spring.
Unfixed Settlements

Ever since she lived there, she never sent her rent on time and would send random installments. At first, the payments were huge to cover the next couple of months, but eventually, they got smaller.
A Huge Setback

The month OP shared this story, her mother-in-law was late on rent by almost $1,000. She was also hired for a new job but hasn’t started yet.
Personal Payment Method

Shockingly, OP’s mother-in-law mentioned that she wanted her rent to be paid through her cleaning. OP’s apartment. She also told OP’s husband that her being late on rent wasn’t a big deal.
Taking Her for a Fool

Apparently, OP found out that her mother-in-law was jobless the whole time she’s been living there, and her husband claimed he didn’t know anything about it.
OP wrote, “I did create a ‘Letter to Comply’ and told my husband to give it to her. He has not.”
Irritating Bug

The following month is just around the corner, and OP is “fed up.” At that point, almost everything her mother-in-law does annoys her, and she has to avoid interacting with her just because of it.
You Swore

Aside from that, the whole situation has caused a problem between OP and her husband, as he vouched for his mom to be their tenant. Now, he doesn’t appear to be bothered by her behavior.
Money, Money, Money!

To make matters worse, OP’s student loan payments are back, and she also has other expenses for furthering her career.
Financially speaking, OP feels like she’s a little stretched thin.
Rejecting Her Idea

Because of this, the idea of renting her current “office” or extra room seems appealing. One of their bathrooms can also be a private one for the tenant, but OP’s husband refused, saying he wants his privacy and the freedom to walk around naked and have all space to himself.
Too Poor for This

OP has been so stressed out about everything, and in all honesty, she just wants to evict her mother-in-law, rent out her apartment, and also the additional room she has. She said they are not wealthy enough to have a family member live in the rental unit for free.
She asked, “Am I the a**hole?”
People’s Points of View

As the legal owner of the building, people suggested OP handle things on her own, such as handing the letter to her mother-in-law. If she still doesn’t comply, OP can start telling the woman and her son the consequences they’ll face.
The top commenter wrote, “If the building is in your name, then you need to hand her the eviction notice, not put it on your husband to do. And tell your husband if she doesn’t go, you’ll sell the place since it’s in your name, and he can go back to living with her, and you’ll go back to taking care of yourself and not his freeloading mother. I’m going to guess he convinced you to go for this multi-dwelling and the idea of his mother being the tenant.”
Kick Both of Them Out!

Redditors think OP should evict her mother-in-law, and if her husband contradicts, then she can do the same to him.
Someone said, “Not the a**hole, but the building is in your name. You are the landlord. You should evict her, and if your husband pitches a fit, evict him too.”
Another person commented, “It’s time for your mother-in-law to be evicted and taken to court for the unpaid rent. If your husband complains, then he can leave as well. He knew that his mother didn’t have a job.”
Got the Guts

Many believe that OP’s mother-in-law has the nerve to do this to her because her son backs her. The community supported OP and said she should stand her ground and do what she must.
A Redditor said, “Not the a**hole. Your mother-in-law is doing what she is doing because she is counting on the fact that her son will stick up for her against you, so she thinks she is untouchable as her baby boy will not let his wife evict her. Do yourself a favor and show both of them you are not a doormat to be walked over and then evict the mooch. If you don’t stick up for yourself now, what else will they expect in the future? You got this!”
Another one agreed, saying, “Exactly. They think you are a pushover. Don’t be a pushover.”
Should OP evict her mother-in-law? What do you think her next steps should be?
