The day before this story was posted, OP shared that she just quit her job. She used to work at a grocery store deli that paid her $12.50 an hour.

She was so frustrated about what she was making. So, she posted about how hard it was to live, especially as a single mom who only made around $450 a week.

An Angry Boss

Upon seeing her post, her boss immediately texted.

She told OP, “Take it down! I know managers that make less than you, and I’m tired of hearing about it. You’re just trying to stir s*** up.”

No Way

However, OP had had enough. She wasn’t going to bend to her demands.

She told her boss she wouldn’t take the post down and noted, “If management made less than me, they should be mad, too.”

An Unpleasant Conversation

OP’s manager then told her that she “just needed to budget her money better.” In turn, OP quit!

Instead of trying to calm her down, she told OP, “You can at least train your replacement.” However, she wouldn’t have it and just ended the conversation.

Manager’s Demands

The day this story was posted, OP’s boss called her and demanded she come to the store to “talk about her post.”

However, OP reminded her that she had already quit and just hung up.

OP had had it with her manager. She also mentioned that this wasn’t the only reason she quit; there were other issues, but this was going to take the cake!

She wrote, “Why do these people think that they can just talk to you any way that they want? There have been other things that have made me want to quit, but this was the last straw.”

Redditors Speak Their Minds

The community couldn’t believe how OP’s boss responded to her concerns. They noted that, in the first place, her wage wasn’t livable.

This man wrote, “You made $12.50 an hour, and their response was to learn to budget better? About $26,000 per year before taxes is not livable. Are they going to allow you to buy food at a high discount to supplement the extremely low pay? No, they’re not. You did the right thing. I’m tired of employers acting like the solution is to budget better when in reality, the cost of living far exceeds their pay.”

Give People a Livable Wage!

People also noted that it was possible OP’s manager also couldn’t “budget better” if she had the same wage as OP.

“The same person telling her to budget better couldn’t live on $35,000, much less their $26,000,” wrote one Redditor.

It’s Not the People

Redditors also said that the problem was not with the employees; it was with companies and the whole industry.

One wrote, “The problem isn’t people not wanting to work. It’s jobs not paying the required living wage to entice people to want to work. $12.50 wasn’t a livable wage for a very long time, and it certainly isn’t now with this inflation.” Another commented, “I made $12.50 an hour at Best Buy in 2000. Gas was like $1.50 a gallon tops. I needed two other roommates to afford a two-bedroom apartment. Gas is $3 plus a gallon now, at least, and rent is easily double what I paid then. How are people still getting paid $12 an hour?”

This Is the American Nightmare

People also called out what a sham the American Dream is!

This user shared, “Today, associates at Home Depot are lucky if they make $13 an hour. All those good knowledgeable people making $30 plus an hour all got pushed out so their replacements could come in at way lower wages. Something happened between then and now where wages took a s*** on the working class. American Dream, they say? F*** that, more like American Nightmare.”

It’s Worse in Some Places

Some Redditors also shared how low minimum wages could go in other states.

This woman said, “Minimum wage in Oklahoma is $7.25 an hour. And yes, there are jobs that only pay that much.” Another shared, “It’s also $7.25 in Utah, but no one actually pays that anymore. Even the fast food places have to start at $13 to get anyone willing to work there.”

Modern Feudalism

The community also noted that humankind is entering a “new era of feudalism.”

“At least with feudalism, your lord would be looked down upon if he didn’t take proper care of his serfs,” said one user. Another agreed, saying, “True, we’re in a more f***** up version where our lords get praise from their fellow elites by exploiting their peasants to the maximum extent possible.”

It’s Just Not Feasible

Users also commented on how hard it was to live with the current minimum wage and that Americans needed a minimum of around $50,000 a year to survive.

This Redditor said, “To keep up with inflation, we probably need at least $50,000 a year minimum with complete healthcare, which should include medical, doctors, and medications, emergency or urgent care, hospital visits, and surgery, and eye and dental. I don’t consider healthcare ‘benefits.’ I consider it a thing that should be mandatory for any job or even no job. Healthcare really should be a basic human right at this point. Things like vacation days feel more like benefits to me.”

Another commented, “Look at the amount of money that people were making during the Great Depression and then account for inflation. Look at the amount of money that people are making now. I’m pretty sure we’re having it worse.”

What do you think about OP’s struggles? Do you relate to her in any way?
