This man would never let someone get away from trying to cheat him out of his well-deserved pay. So, when his evil boss-lady tried doing this to him, he got to make her pay thousands!
Don’t Worry; You’ll Be Trained!
OP (Original Poster) got a job as an EMT after going through a six-month community college training course. He barely knew the basics and was “woefully unqualified.”
Even so, his teacher kept saying that he shouldn’t worry. After all, “the new job will train him when he is hired.”
Couldn’t Be More Wrong
He got hired at an ambulance transport service that took people to dialysis and similar things. So, he was never in charge of any emergencies.
However, OP’s teacher couldn’t have been more wrong. There was no training!
You’re on Your Own
OP was told to “figure it out himself.” So, when he started the job, he immediately realized he wasn’t a good fit.
Yet, he continued to try and do his best.
It’s Time to Let You Go
Unfortunately, after four days, OP was fired. He was asked to sign a document listing why he was being let go.
He agreed with everything stated in the document. So, he signed and didn’t contest anything.
His Last Pay
After signing, OP asked them if they had his last check ready. However, the man in charge of the paperwork said they didn’t and that they’d send it to him.
OP noted, “Not exactly legal, but okay.”
Waiting and Waiting
OP waited and waited, but there was still no check. So, he called the company to ask where it was.
He knew he was supposed to get it almost immediately, as per the law, so he called a couple of times to check where it was.
Evil Boss-Lady
However, whenever he called, his boss was always rude and hung up on him. When he did get a hold of someone, they’d say, “We’ll mail it.”
OP was getting frustrated at how ridiculous everything was, so he started researching labor laws.
What the Law States Versus What He Got
Upon doing so, he discovered that the company would have to give him a day’s pay for every day his check was late, which was $150. So, he stopped calling and just started waiting quietly.
However, when he finally got it, it was just a payroll check. OP wrote, “It turns out I had worked two days in a one-pay period and two on the next one. So I called again to tell them and got yelled at by the boss-lady.”
Another Waiting Game
So, he waited another two weeks before finally getting his last check. Then, he filed his claim with the labor board for “not getting his final paycheck in the time allowed by law,” as it had already been a month by then.
Mediation
Their first meeting was about mediation, where they tried to settle. However, OP’s boss-lady wasn’t having it and said that she didn’t owe OP anything and that her last offer was $500.
OP wrote, “She said this was all a setup by me. I knew they owed me closer to $3,000, and she didn’t have a leg to stand on, so I refused. She stomped out and said I’d be hearing from her lawyer. Next, we went before a labor judge.”
The Second Meeting
During their second meeting, OP could tell his evil boss-lady had done her research, giving “every excuse an employer can use for not paying him the last check.”
OP shared, “She said I moved. She said I never tried to call them and that they tried to call me numerous times. She said they tried to call me to get my address, but my number was changed. She said her husband was a cop, and she was an honest person, and I was a liar and did all this intentionally. She said I purposely didn’t clock in, and the times were messed up. She also claimed a ton of reasons why I was fired, claiming I had almost killed one of the patients, none of which were listed on the paper they made me sign, and the judge called her out on that.”
His Records and Evidence
After the second meeting, OP went home, printed his phone records, and highlighted all the calls; he also printed a letter from his landlord saying he hadn’t moved. He took these back to the labor board and dropped them off.
He wasn’t sure if the judge ever saw the evidence he put together, but OP did win the case!
His Winnings
OP was only supposed to get paid until the postmark date, but he got more!
He wrote, “The judge added four days because the last check was sent on a Friday before a three-day weekend. I was only supposed to be paid until the postmark date, but I got paid until the following Tuesday. Over $3,000!”
More Stuff Against Her
OP also let it slip that his evil boss-lady wasn’t paying the ambulance drivers double overtime after 12 hours. The mediator said she’d look into it, and OP hoped the board did.
The Community’s Two Cents
For the community, OP did a great job with his revenge. People also noted that it was well-deserved!
One said, “I was ready to go to bed. Now I’m fired up from this righteous payback! Good on you; companies that can’t get the little stuff right have no business doing any big stuff either.”
Another wrote, “It’s a numbers game; they get away with it so often it’s worth a go trying to get away with it. I bet the evil boss-lady got a carpeting, even if it’s unwritten company policy. The labor board was right to come down on them like a ton of bricks. OP, well done for sticking it to the man, especially in a way she couldn’t legally get out of it. You deserve every penny.”
They Do It on Purpose
Some Redditors also noted that companies usually do things like this intentionally and that OP was right to fight for his rights!
One said, “It’s not that the companies can’t get it right. They do this on purpose, knowing only a very few will fight it. Happens a lot with minorities or migrant workers.”
What do you think of OP’s revenge? What would you do if you were in his shoes?
