OP (Original Poster) had had problems with his defective stove and landlord for years. He’s had enough, so he reported him to the authorities!
Walking Down Memory Lane

In October of 2014, OP moved into a basement room of an apartment. He mentioned he shared the unit with a lady from Oman.
However, this wasn’t OP’s issue. Instead, he had a problem with a stove in his unit and his landlord.
Meet the Landlord

OP’s landlord and his wife lived upstairs but “shared nothing” with the rest of the tenants. Safe to say, they weren’t very accommodating.
OP’s Stove Problems

OP was a short guy with short arms and a beer belly. So, he noted, “Reaching the back burners safely isn’t always easy for me.”
However, he needed to do it because the large front burner was broken when he moved in.
Landlord’s Incessant Refusal

He’d already asked his landlord to replace it that first time. So, when he went out and bought some groceries, his landlord supposedly went in and “fixed” the stove.
However, OP shared, “Later, I learned that he simply used a 14-gauge wire to move the power from the back right to the front right burner!”
Two Years Later

In 2016, OP’s “fixed” burner started to spark. So, in February of that year, OP asked his landlord to buy a new stove for the unit, as the current one was “not safe.”
His Suggestions

OP went as far as going online to help his landlord find some affordable ones.
He said, “I go online, find a half dozen local ‘Scratch & Dent’ and ‘Refurb’ companies that have new or ‘refurb’ stoves for under $500.”
Adamantly Refusing

However, OP’s landlord adamantly refused to purchase a new one. Instead, he decided to “fix” the stove again with another 14-gauge wire.
Not Safe

Because of this, OP didn’t feel safe in his own apartment anymore. Who knows what could happen with a sparking stove that hasn’t been replaced in years?
So, OP called the Toronto Fire Department so he could reach out to their safety inspectors. He also reached out to the Ontario Electrical Safety Authority.
Almost 100 Violations!

When the two departments visited and inspected the apartment, they found about 40 violations each.
OP said, “A month later, after about 8 hours of work and a new $800 stove, the electrician leaves, and the ESA inspects again and approves it.”
You Cost Me Thousands!

That same night, OP’s landlord came and banged on his door. Then, he accused OP of costing him $10,000 in repairs and fines.
He even threatened OP and said he would be evicted in 60 days.
Too Late for Regrets

OP then looked his landlord in the eye and said, “Man, if you’d just f****** listened to me and bought that $300 stove at the ‘Scratch & Dent’ place, you could have saved $9,700, right?”
It was definitely too late for OP’s landlord to have regrets.
Ignoring His Landlord

After what he told his landlord, OP shut the door in his face! Then, he cranked the TV up to a high volume until he didn’t hear his landlord’s knocks anymore.
He effectively ignored him!
Moving Out

Since then, OP’s landlord and his wife have been stomping around. OP got tired of this, and six weeks after their initial confrontation, he decided to move out of the apartment of his own volition.
He said, “Eventually, I moved into a nice studio apartment and have been here for a while now.”
The Community’s Suggestions

OP’s landlord’s threat of evicting OP didn’t sit well with Redditors.
One man commented, “Wouldn’t evicting you be considered retaliation?” Another Redditor replied, “Yes. He sure likes to be on the wrong side of regulators, it seems.”
He Should Pay

Others noted how they wished OP had reported his landlord to the Landlord and Tenant Board to ensure the same thing didn’t happen to others, especially with how his landlord threatened to evict him.
“I’d hope that OP would follow up with the LTB and hand the s***** landlord his a**. Unfortunately, those who escape s***** landlords don’t pursue things but just get on with their lives, letting the jerk prey on the next tenant,” said one user.
What do you think about what happened with OP? Should he have pursued the issue further?
