Finding a Place to Live In
OP (Original Poster) shared that she found her apartment through Gumtree, the British version of Craigslist. She said she found a room in a nice, modern apartment near a great area; it also had an en-suite bathroom.
Her Landlord
She mentioned her landlord was a man who also lived in one of the rooms inside the apartment. He was around her age but was a bit weird, in OP’s opinion.
She said, “Kind of a weird, awkward guy, but I didn’t have much of a problem with that.”
Weird Habits and Living Arrangements
OP shared that her landlord had nothing but a bar, two sets of clothes, and a laptop in his room. She said that he just slept on the floor.

OP wrote that she initially hadn’t noticed that her landlord only rented out the rooms to single, foreign females.
Spending Time Together
Even though her landlord weirded her out, she said things were fine for about a year. In fact, they even spent time together.

Getting Herself a Boyfriend
After years of being single, OP found a boyfriend. However, she didn’t expect it would be a problem for her landlord.

She explained that it wasn’t like her boyfriend stayed in her apartment without paying rent. She said he just visited a few evenings, and they were just confined in her room.
OP said she knew the possible issues people might see by bringing one’s partner into a shared house. However, she pointed out, “I also feel that if you rent your flat, you shouldn’t expect people to not live their lives either.”
Eviction Notice
Then, one day, while OP was at work, she received a message from her landlord saying she had to go. He said that the flat “had become unsociable.”
The news blindsided OP, and she was very upset.
Back to Gumtree
Upon finding out about the eviction notice, OP’s boyfriend immediately went to Gumtree to help her find a new place.
However, OP and her boyfriend didn’t expect that her landlord would have already advertised her current room as “available” minutes after texting her that she had to move out.
Female and Single Only!
OP said that the Gumtree ad “ranted” about how the new tenant “must be female and single.”
She said, “Clearly, he was very intimidated by other men, and I guess I got punished for that.”

OP remembered that her landlord once told her that he was claiming single occupancy of the flat. Because of this, he got a council tax discount while renting the rooms to two people.
Time for My Revenge
Because of her landlord’s petty actions, she decided she would get revenge. She said, “I packed up and left within a week and reported him to the council for tax evasion.”
