This Redditor withdrew her job application after they made her do a take-home project. It’s just not worth it for her!
Tedious Interview Process
Many companies have a rigid hiring process, usually including a couple of interviews. However, have you ever encountered a company that lined up five interviews for you and made you do a take-home project?
Just My Luck
Well, this was precisely what happened to OP (Original Poster). She was so frustrated with the hiring process that she withdrew her job application!
It’s Understandable
Well, who could blame her? OP just finished three rounds of interviews, and then she found out there would be more steps!
A Take-Home Project
During the hiring process, OP was informed that the next task would be to complete a take-home assignment.
She found it funny that the team lead said, “Everyone loves the take-home assignment and finds it very exciting.”
Agree to Disagree
For OP, there’s no way this could be the case. She said, “I don’t know one person who loves take-home assignments.”
More Steps
But the take-home project wasn’t her only issue. If she did well there, there would still be another two interviews!
Time-Consuming Project
Another problem was that it would take her at least 15 to 20 hours of unpaid work!
It would be a different story if OP were going to get paid or if she was so keen on taking the job.
I’m Not Pushing Through With It
Unfortunately, neither was the case. So, she ultimately decided to withdraw her job application.
Not Worth It
For OP, it was simply “not worth it.” It would require too much effort for a role “not even guaranteed.”
She added, “Plus, I was not super keen on the role.”
Not What She Wanted
OP explained that she wanted something more along the lines of a tech role. But the job she was previously applying for required her to prepare multiple detailed plans and more, which were irrelevant to what she wanted to pursue.
Utter Relief
OP then emailed the company, informing them she won’t push through with her application. After sending it, she felt a “huge wave of relief.”
Now she’s asking, “Will I regret it?”
Redditors’ Opinions on the Matter
Redditors agreed that the 20-hour unpaid project was not worth it.
A top commenter said, “If it’s a three-hour take home at the final stage, then you might have, but this would have been a total waste of time. They will likely invite 10 people to do it and progress the best 3 or 4.” To this, OP replied, “Yes, exactly! I saw what they wanted me to do, and it was too much work.”
It’s Too Much!
People were also surprised at how extensive the hiring process was. Five interviews were already too much, so making applicants complete a 20-hour take-home assignment was pushing it.
“A big piece of homework and two more rounds after that? F*** off. This isn’t Squid Game; they’re bad at making decisions,” wrote one user.’
Their Rules
One Redditor also shared his rules when it came to job applications, interviews, and take-home projects.
He said, “My rule of thumb is if I am presenting it in an interview regardless—and it’s less than three hours to prep at final—I do it. If it’s the second round or even a pre-interview round and meeting someone is contingent on its review, then skip.”
What would you do if you were in OP’s shoes? Do you think she’ll regret it?
