OP (Original Poster) was stoked to attend her favorite cousin’s wedding. However, little did she know it would become one of the worst experiences of her life yet!
A Wedding in the Land Down Under

OP is an 18-year-old who lives in the United States. She recently attended her cousin’s, whom she referred to as A in this story, wedding in Australia.
She prefaced her story by saying, “Lots went down, and I am getting flack for my dress.”
Cultural Differences

She shared that she belonged to an Indian family, while A’s husband, whom she referred to as M in her post, is White. Because of this dynamic, there were two ceremonies, like the Jonas-Chopra wedding.
OP prepared a pink floral ghagra choli for the Indian ceremony. Then, to keep the same theme, she wore a pink floral dress with a slit for the Christian ceremony.
A Beautiful Ceremony

OP shared that A wore a maroon red ghagra choli for the Indian ceremony since it was their culture’s traditional wedding color. Then, she wore a white wedding dress for the Christian ceremony.
She added, “It wasn’t a conservative wedding by any means. The venue wasn’t a church; it was this pretty outdoor botanical garden.”
Her Favorite Cousin

A is OP’s favorite cousin, and she’s also the one OP’s closest to. So, she decided to “go all out” with her gift.
Her family had already gotten the couple something. Still, she added an envelope with a check for $1,000, which she had saved from working.
That’s an “Inappropriate” Dress!

OP’s ghagra choli was fine for the Indian ceremony, so she expected that her other dress would be okay, too. After all, they had similar colors and patterns.
However, her dress was deemed “inappropriate” by M’s family.
Nit-Picking Her Dress

They told OP what they thought of the dress, and initially, OP thought it was because of the slit. However, they said it looked “too pale” and “unacceptable.”
However, OP noted it was a “blush pink with bright, almost-neon colors on it.” OP shared, “I said sorry, but I didn’t have another dress suitable enough for a wedding that I could change into, and M’s family seemed mad.”
Not What It Seems

OP left it at that and went on with her day. She noted that the ceremony was beautiful, and she was happy for A and M.
However, things immediately turned sour when it was time for the reception.
Dancing and Wine—Lots of Wine!

During the reception, OP was celebrating and dancing her heart out with her family. But after the wine started pouring, she suddenly felt a splash down her front.
OP wrote, “I looked down, and I almost freaked out because I thought I got shot or something. There was this huge red wine stain dripping down my front, and I saw M’s sister, mom, and aunt laughing, with M’s sister holding a glass.”
Wedding Bullies

OP finally snapped; she started yelling about how they “ruined a brand-new dress for a stupid reason.” What made things worse was that they weren’t taking things seriously.
They kept laughing, and OP even saw A giggle and M grin. So, OP decided to take back the $1,000 she gifted the couple.
Too Late for Regrets

She said that when A saw her face and reaction, she stood up to help her. But OP was already on her way to walk out of the venue.
Everyone else stopped laughing, and M asked her to stay. M’s family then wanted to apologize after they found out how much money was in the envelope.
Blinded by Money

They started saying how the money OP planned to give “could be helpful in this economy.” But OP decided to push through with leaving since she felt horribly disrespected and humiliated by what had just transpired.
Different Sides

After the fiasco, M, his family, and OP’s parents are all saying that what OP did was in bad taste—for different reasons.
OP shared, “My family wants me to keep the peace, but I don’t want to give my hard-earned money to horrid people.”
Insincere Conversations

OP’s now getting texts, Whatsapp messages, and more. Her phone is just “blowing up!”
However, she refuses to talk to A until M apologizes. A is trying to do so, but M is firm, too, and refuses to acknowledge his mistake.
The Community’s Pieces of Advice

For the community, even if both A and M apologize, it’s too late—for both the money and their relationship with OP.
This user wrote, “Not the a**hole. If that’s the dress you wore, then they seemed to be overly concerned. But if A was laughing or smirking about the wine, maybe she was the one who was upset by it. Regardless, an apology from either of them sounds like it would be meaningless. Keep the money and treat yourself.”
Another Redditor commented, “Not the a**hole. Due to your young age, I think you are too naive to realize what really happened that day. A was in on it. They all felt threatened by your dress and looks.”
Wish Her Luck!

Aside from congratulating A, people advised OP to wish her luck after marrying into a family like the one M has.
“Good luck to your cousin for marrying into this s***** family with jerks and giant a**holes. They showed you who they were; believe them. Don’t reach out to her to give her a spa day. Wait till she reaches out to you or her husband apologizes to you. No apology means no wedding gift,” advised one user.
This person said, “Do not reward that woman for standing by that man. If my husband’s family did that to a close family member of mine, and he thought public humiliation was funny, I would end the wedding and leave him that instant. She’s staying by his side; she’s obviously not that sorry.”
What do you think of what happened during A’s wedding? Do you also think A was part of the plan?
