He waited for the guy behind him to stop grabbing his plane seat, but he never did. So, he had no choice but to make him retreat—the hard way!
The Beginning of a Terrible Flight

When OP (Original Poster) posted this story, he had just been on a flight from Germany to Macedonia. The plane hadn’t even left the gate when he felt his seat shaking.
The First Attempt

When he turned around, he saw a man grabbing the back of his seat. At this exact moment, the man saw OP and removed his hand.
Retract and Repeat

OP thought that would be the end of it, but he was wrong. The man repeated what he did multiple times within the next 10 minutes.
He Wasn’t Dense After All

So, whenever the man grabbed his seat, OP would lean back, trying to press against his hand, making him retract it.
The Continuation

However, the shaking resumed after the plane took off, so OP looked back again. This time, however, the man was only grabbing the very top, which was out of OP’s head’s reach.
Cheap Tricks

Then OP “dramatically” turned around, and glancing back from the aisle, it appeared that the man was looking or talking to a woman sitting three rows back, whom OP presumed was the guy’s partner.
OP wrote, “They’d likely opted for the cheaper ‘random seat selection,’ hence the distance. When our eyes met, he pulled his hand away.”
It’s Annoying and Inconvenient

OP thinks the man was using his chair as leverage to turn around and talk to the woman, who may have been his girlfriend. But why couldn’t he just use his armrest or anything that’s not OP’s seat?
Running Out of Patience

At that point, the man had done that at least 20 times, and OP was already getting irritated, to say the least.
A Disgusting Yet Effective Revenge

So, the next time OP felt the shaking, he pretended to stretch, wet his fingers with “a generous lick—near spit on them,” then grabbed the back of his seat and drenched the guy’s hand.
Afterward, the guy didn’t touch OP’s seat for the remainder of the flight.
There Was No Other Choice

OP didn’t know how else to get his point across. He had no idea how he could signal to the man behind him that he was tired of him shaking his seat, especially after many failed attempts of doing so with eye contact and more.
Still, he asked, “Was I wrong?”
Out of Consideration

In a comment, OP explained why he let that happen for so long, and that’s because, at first, he gave the man the benefit of the doubt, thinking he was just scared of flying. But every time OP looked back, he saw the guy smiling and talking to the woman.
The man wasn’t panicking or scared. He was just rude.
Words Won’t Work

Aside from that, talking to the man would require someone to translate as he speaks Macedonian, and OP’s language is English. There was clearly a language barrier, hence his using eye contact.
OP also said that his speaking English could have gotten him worse treatment from some foreigners.
The Community’s Suggestions

The man behind OP knew precisely what he was doing, but he still kept doing it. So, OP had to find a solution, and gladly, it worked.
A Redditor said, “You looked back multiple times, and he removed his hand each time. He understood what was happening. What you did worked. Case closed.”
Another one wrote, “Asking him to stop would have been useless. He already knew what he was doing was wrong, or else he wouldn’t have removed his hands when you gave him the eye. Some people only respond to physical stimulus.”
How Others Solved Such a Bother

OP is not alone in experiencing such. Some Redditors even commented on how they handled their own battles.
Someone shared, “Had a similar experience at a concert once. The guy behind me kept putting his hand on my back and trying to push me forward. I let it go and held my ground the first couple of times, but he continued. So I grabbed his hand and held it every time he pushed. I guess he wasn’t too keen on holding another man’s hand while his girlfriend was standing next to him.”
The same person added, “Eventually, he got aggressive about it, and I turned around and said, ‘Look, dude, if you continue touching me, we will be holding hands for the rest of the concert.’ Guess who moved somewhere else and stopped bothering me? Sometimes you got to make a power move that they don’t expect.”
Effective Ways

Some people think that in such scenarios, being loud and shaming the person in public always works as a solution.
“I have always found public shaming works best. A loud ‘Are you trying to touch me?’ or ‘Will you please keep your hands to yourself?’ that at least three rows can hear does the trick,” a commenter wrote.
What would you do if such an annoying thing happened to you? Would you act the same as OP?
