This woman turned to TikTok to share her experience when she went to the McDonald’s drive-thru. She was told her total was $17, then was suddenly asked to pay $25—all because of an employee’s mistake!
Paying It Forward
Everyone knows about the widespread social trend nowadays, “paying it forward.” This happens when someone, out of the goodness of their heart, offers to do a stranger some good—whether it be paying for their groceries, helping an elderly cross a street, or others.
Then, to “pay it forward,” that stranger does something out of the goodness of their heart to another stranger, too. Although similar, this is not what happened to Jordan Reynolds Bailey in her TikTok video; for many, it was the opposite!
Fast Food Date
Jordan Bailey, OP (Original Poster), went through a McDonald’s drive-thru and ordered food for herself, her husband, and their child.
She spoke through the ordering window and told the person what she wanted to get.
Confirming Her Order
Then, when she drove to the next window, the lady asked if she had gotten her order correctly.
The lady asked Jordan, “Did you get three kids’ meals and a couple of other things?”
That’s Not Mine!
Jordan immediately said she got it wrong. OP said, “No, I ordered one kids’ meal and three sandwiches.”
The Big Oops
OP was confused about what was happening, especially when she heard the woman say, “Uh oh.”
Then, the lady immediately closed the window, started talking to her colleagues, and ran to the front.
Trying to Make Sense of Things
Still unaware of what was taking place, Jordan assumed that the lady had gone to the car that came before her. She thought the lady might have charged the car in front of her with her order total.
An Entirely Different Total
The woman then returned, pulled the window up, and told Jordan that her total was “$25 something.” Jordan knew something was amiss, as when she ordered, the woman said her total was only $17!
She said, “You just told me it was $17 when I ordered my food.”
Baffling Excuses
The lady wouldn’t admit to her mistake, though. Instead of doing so, she made excuses and made it seem like OP was “paying it forward.”
She told OP, “Yeah, but the car in front of you just paid for yours. So you’re paying for theirs.”
There’s No Way
Jordan wouldn’t just accept this.
For one, it’s more expensive. Second, it’s not her food!
Not Bending
OP told the woman flat-out that she wouldn’t be paying for it.
She said, “No. I didn’t order that food, nor am I getting that food. So I’ll pay for the food that I ordered.”
Making Things Right
Because Jordan was firm in her decision, the lady who made the mistake couldn’t simply cover it up. She had to get the manager to come and fix the order so that OP could pay for what was hers.
Insights From Redditors
Users flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts on Jordan’s story.
One person pointed out that what happened to her was the opposite of paying it forward. The user wrote, “That’s called paying it backward!”
She Should Own Up to Her Mistake!
Some called the lady out for trying to make others pay for her mistakes.
“The cashier messed up and accidentally charged the other car for her order. Now she wanted her to pay for theirs, so it evens out,” commented one TikToker.
A woman agreed, saying, “She was just trying to fix their own error without having to bring the manager into it. Trying to save her own b***.”
It’s Unheard Of!
TikTokers who worked in the food industry couldn’t understand how and why the cashier lady tried to sweep things under the rug. Mistakes are part of everyday life, and trying to trick a customer doesn’t make things right.
One wrote, “I was a restaurant manager for 20 years, and this is the first time I ever heard that. And believe me, we have had cashiers collect on the wrong order.”
“Customer service and the people that get employed in these jobs have gone way downhill,” wrote one man.
Do you participate in anything similar to paying it forward? Would you pay for someone else’s mistake or call them out for it, like what OP did?
