This teacher is so done with the silence on this educational matter. Everyone knows there’s a problem, yet no one’s doing anything about it!
Addressing the Problem
A middle school teacher named Quis turned to TikTok to vent his frustrations regarding the education system.
Let’s Talk About It!
He started his video by encouraging people to discuss the matter, telling everyone to take a moment to debrief and unpack what was in front of them.
Aftermath of the Pandemic
Everybody, even Quis himself, knows the world is behind due to the pandemic. However, he doesn’t understand why no one is talking about how bad it is.
Flunking Everything
He shared that he teaches seventh grade, then admitted that most of his students are still performing on the fourth-grade level.
Quis said, “I don’t care how you flip it, turn it, swing it. They are still performing on the fourth-grade level.”
All Pass, No Fail
Furthermore, he discussed how no one seems to mind how students are passing to go on to the next grade even though they lack the skills and are obviously underperforming.
He added, “I can put as many zeros in this grade book as I want to. They’re going to move that child to the eighth grade next year.”
One’s Shortcomings
Then, he pointed out why many parents don’t know their kids are not performing well. Quis said that many of them quickly blame the teachers, saying it’s their job to educate the students.
Quis clarified, “I just got here 30 days ago. She was performing on the fourth-grade level since fourth grade.”
A Form of Neglect
As parents, they are also responsible for their children’s learning. Therefore, they should’ve noticed and known that their kids were underperforming.
Quis added, “So, you let the child go three years, and you never knew that your child was still in fourth grade and never left it?”
The Alarming Truth
The problem seems to disappoint and anger Quis, as seen in his face in the TikTok video.
He even said, “The fourth grade is being nice. I still have kids performing on grade K, one, two, and third grade levels. I could probably count, on one hand, how many kids are actually performing on their grade level. Are you joking right now? These are our future leaders, future doctors, and future nurses. Our future. Please.”
What People Have to Say
Some teachers shared their experiences in teaching their students and how disappointing they were.
A TikToker wrote, “Tell me why my sophomores are spelling ‘rough’ as ‘ruff’ and ‘chaotic’ as ‘cayotick.’”
Another user said, “Taught an ‘honors’ physics class for the best students. I had to use sixth-grade material.”
In Every Aspect
A TikToker pointed out that this generation isn’t just behind in studying but is also less advanced when it comes to other aspects, such as emotions.
“It’s not just academics. They’re behind in their behavior and emotional regulation as well,” one user said.
A Learner’s Dilemma
One student on the platform also admitted their lack of skills and knowledge and how they regretted not studying more.
A student shared, “Honestly, I’m in my senior year, and I can’t remember math that well. I only know how to add, subtract, and divide. I hate it, and I wish I went back.”
Political Connection
Some people believed this was the plan of the government to control people.
A commenter wrote, “Just what the government wants. It’s easier to manipulate and control a mass of dumb people than intelligent ones.”
Another person added, “That’s also why they have hijacked the term ‘woke,’ equating knowledge with something bad.”
A Much-Needed Awakening
Some commenters thanked OP for opening the discussion and genuinely caring for his students.
One person said, “So happy to see a teacher who cares about the performance of his students. This is what truly loving your students looks like. May you succeed!”
Another one wrote, “I agree. Parents do need to step up and take responsibility. Thanks for your good words and challenge to parents.”
A Longstanding Issue
Others said this matter has been long overdue and just heightened during and after the pandemic.
“Many of our American students have been behind for a long time. This is nothing new. To say that ‘no one is doing anything’ about it is a false narrative. We need to get back to just being honest with parents and students,” a commenter said.
The same person wrote, “If a student is not performing at grade level, we are either going to hold them back, or they will be in summer school or attending class on the weekends. We have a host of teachers who don’t mind holding class on Saturday for a few hours. The solutions are there. We just want to make excuses and point fingers. Hold these kids accountable.”
What can you say about this problem? Do you have any suggestions on how to solve it?
