An Out-Of-Touch Gen Z TikToker “Privilege Checked” a Homeless Man Sleeping in His Car Outside a Hospital. Now She’s Slammed by the Online Community!

A man posted a TikTok video answering questions about staying safe while living in a car. In response, a woman chose to berate the man, claiming that living in a vehicle shows having privilege.

A man posted a “duet” TikTok video, first showcasing a man showing his living situation while living in a car. Then, it was followed by a woman reacting to the said video.

Since authorities often force homeless people sleeping in their cars to move, the man in the first video decided to get creative about where he parks his car.

He made a video answering questions about living in a car and said, “Staying in your car and needing a safe place to sleep?” He follows up with, “Try a hospital. You don’t have to pay.”

False Assumptions

Then, the video was cut and replied to by another woman, who decided she needed to “privilege check” him. She did this by posting an edited version of his video, where she stitched herself in, saying, “You did pay for it.”

Privilege Check Gone Wrong

Privilege checks are beloved by the internet and are often used to call out people unaware of their own good fortune.

This woman decided to point out that having a vehicle was expensive and included the price of gas and insurance. She claimed that many didn’t have the resources to afford a car, so OP should acknowledge his privilege.

Backlash Ensues

The woman was blind to the kind of backlash that she would garner with the video she posted. So, shocked by the responses, she decided to disable her video’s comments.

Deleted but Not Forgotten

At first, it seemed that the backlash had worked. Soon, she took down the video altogether.

Maybe she truly had been shamed enough to learn her lesson to not judge people too quickly.

Misconstrued and Inaccurate Statistics

However, shortly after taking the video down, the woman posted another video on the subject and doubled down on her opinion.

In this one, she used statistics from ChatGPT to show that many in the world can’t afford a car and that “it is a privilege to recognize and be educated that car ownership is normalized in North American culture.”

The woman showed off all the numbers and statistics she got from the website. At some point, she even pointed out that car ownership is much higher in developed countries versus developing countries.

She said, “Car ownership itself is clearly a much bigger privilege.”

However, the “facts” she tried to lay out weren’t entirely accurate.

One of the big issues with using ChatGPT to try and prove something is that it doesn’t always give factual information. There is even a disclaimer on ChatGPT that information could be false or “biased.”

The Online Community’s Thoughts

People on TikTok responded quickly. One user commented, “Trying to ‘check your privilege’ someone that’s sleeping in their car is insane.”

Another added, “I—that’s literally homelessness?”

The Context of Car Ownership

As some users pointed out, the US does not have a good public transportation system. For many, having a vehicle is the only way to get a job or go anywhere.

One online user commented, “It’s North America. It’s not normalization. It’s an unhealthy dependency and mandatory to get anywhere.”

Additional Points Made

Others pointed out that some people don’t experience poverty until after they purchase a car. It was noted that in some cases, people may have nothing else except for their vehicle and that poverty can strike without warning.

One even said, “Like, does she have any idea how many people sleep and live in their cars?”

Chronically Online

Many people have pointed out that the woman who posted the video exhibits symptoms of being chronically online. This is a condition where being online so much makes a person’s sense of reality skewed, and their ability to address real-world problems becomes hampered.

A TikToker was appalled by the woman’s argument, saying, “Same logic applies to a homeless person eating food.”

“She is really acting like she made a point, but, like, bro is living in his car. No points need to be made,” said another

This condition has affected chiefly those from the Gen Z and millennial generations. It appears that this woman has been too disconnected from real life.

To give an example of how the woman was actually the one privileged, a man said, “You forgot the part where she has a roof over her head in New York City—one of the most expensive cities in this country.”

American Culture

Some points were also made about how American culture revolves around car ownership.

A TikToker wrote, “‘Not a lot of people can afford them.’ Is she seriously implying that most people are so destitute that they are homeless without a car?”

Not the Point

However, even though America might have systemic issues regarding reliance on car ownership and many people being too poor to afford one, that doesn’t excuse this woman from attacking the man for just trying to survive homelessness. Plus, people shouldn’t have to defend their humble lifestyle, and it would be better if people would mind their own business.

One said, “We are shaming people for having a single item to their name.”

Another wrote, “She’s an example of a USP major who’s dived too far into theory and forgotten that human life still exists beyond the abstract.”

What do you think? Was the woman out of line for attacking a homeless man living in his car?
