A man’s brother left right after high school to join a religious cult and marry his high school sweetheart. They lost everything to the government, and now his brother wants to move in with him.
A Strange Crowd
OP’s (Original Poster) brother got involved with some “religious nutjobs” in high school and left as soon as he turned 18. He married his high school sweetheart, and they lived a homestead lifestyle where she didn’t work, and they had nine children.
The Government’s Share
For some reason, the cult hadn’t paid their taxes, so the government repossessed their land and property. Because of this, OP’s brother, wife, and nine children have nowhere to live.
A Modest Estate
OP lived in a modest two-bedroom house with 1.5 bathrooms. OP’s wife had her office in one of the two bedrooms, as she works from home.
Full Contribution
Not only was OP’s wife not a stay-at-home mom, but she could also make large bonuses and earn up to 70% of their income. They didn’t have any kids, so they would use the bonus money to go on vacations, travel, and “do their own thing.”
Reaching Out
With no warning, OP’s brother asked if he could move himself and his four oldest kids into their home. He even sent plans that showed where the bunk beds should go in what was OP’s wife’s office.
Are You Kidding?
OP refused to let his brother move in because that room was where his wife worked. His brother was angry, and OP said he didn’t seem to realize that women could work and work from home without that work consisting of cooking, cleaning, and “spitting out babies every year.”
Who Else Will Help?
To add to the issue, OP’s parents had joined the cult and had both died, one in 2020 and the other in 2022. The cult didn’t believe in hospitals, so they didn’t go and get cared for, choosing to leave it up to God.
Stay Away From Us
No one else in OP’s extended family wanted anything to do with his brother or his brother’s family. This situation led OP’s brother to tell him that he had to find a home for his family because the “big bad government” had “stolen” his house and land.
What About Another Way?
Since OP had said no to moving in, his brother changed tactics. He asked OP if he could help them pay his back taxes and get his home back, and it would only cost OP “a vacation or an extra music festival.”
Not His Money
OP continued to tell his brother no because he was asking for his wife’s bonus money. That wasn’t OP’s to spend, and he told his brother that helping out “s***** cult members” was not high on his wife’s priority list.
A Messy Situation
When OP told his brother, his brother got angry and said OP was no family of his. A cult member also reached out and threatened him with going to hell if he abandoned his brother.
Brotherly Love
OP said he “wished he could be as good of a brother as Cain.” This response horrified the cult member, but OP didn’t feel the situation was his problem or responsibility.
Redditors’ Two Cents
Redditors were eager to defend OP and give him support. Some of them had some very pointed things to say.
One of the top comments was, “Trust me, he thought you were an evil sinner—until he needed money. Then you were family. Not the a**hole.”
Some Redditors even offered biblical responses to the situation, one saying, “Not the a**hole. Your brother thinks he’s generally entitled to your house, income, and life. Helping doesn’t mean turning over the reigns of your life to your brother for his benefit. He needs to own up to his responsibilities, and he can declare bankruptcy if needed. By the way, you will not go to hell for refusing to aid your fiscally irresponsible brother. The Bible has some particular teachings on being responsible with money. Your brother’s failings are not your failings. You do not have to partake in his downfall. If you want to give them some funds to keep them off the streets, it’s between you and your wife how much to give and where the cutoff line is, but they are not entitled to anything.”
Not Much Family Left
The sad truth is that OP and his brother only have each other left. His brother’s decisions made the gulf between them, and he didn’t try to cross it until it was too late.
One Redditor noted, “Not the a**hole. The cult is trying to get your money and house; this is how cults work. They drain their members of all their resources, which is why your brother has no money. Then they get their members to try to get whatever they can from family, friends, work associates, anyone. If you give your brother money, that will go directly to the cult. If you let them move in with you, they’ll try to convert you to the cult, try to find ways to get money out of you, etc. Do not give them anything.”
What do you think about this cult? Should OP help his brother, or has his brother made all the wrong choices leading to this outcome?
