A Deal With Their Parents
A few years ago, OP’s parents offered him and his siblings a deal. They could have $25,000 as soon as they graduated from high school, or wait until they graduated college, got a trade, or were self-supporting for the next four years until they got their inheritance.
If they chose the latter, they’d get $125,000 instead of $25,000.
His Brothers’ Choices
OP’s two oldest brothers went to college before getting the money. Then, they used their inheritance to start their lives.
On the other hand, OP’s other older brother didn’t take the same option. He took the $25,000 upfront and moved to Southeast Asia.
Life in Asia
Initially, OP’s brother lived a pretty good life.
He did so for three years until he ran out of money and had to come home. The pandemic also hit, and he got stuck where he was.
Dependent on Their Parents
When his brother came home, their parents welcomed him with open arms. They let him live there while he was looking for a job.
However, he ended up going to university and is currently working on getting his teaching degree.
OP’s Choice
OP, on the other hand, had just recently graduated college. He received $125,000 and will use the money to put a downpayment on a house.
His Brother’s Request
Then, soon after that, his brother approached him, asking if he’d share some of his money so he could buy a car.
OP wasn’t keen on giving in. After all, their parents were already letting him live with them; they were also paying for his education!
It’s Not Fair
Their parents weren’t giving his brother any spending money. Even so, OP thought it was unfair for him to have to share the money he waited patiently for.
He said, “I had fulfilled my end of the bargain.”
An Argument Between Brothers
Upon hearing OP’s refusal, his brother got upset. He told OP he was a “dumba**” for not going out and seeing the world.
OP noted, “I’m not sure how much he saw stuck in a country in Southeast Asia during Covid.”
You’re Greedy!
That wasn’t the end. OP’s brother even accused him of being a “greedy a**hole” for not sharing his money.
However, for OP, his brother was irresponsible. He said he should have done something with it in the last three years aside from seeing the world.
It Doesn’t Matter
His brother argued that he could have gone for four years if it wasn’t for the pandemic. But for OP, none of his excuses mattered since he’d already taken the money.
He’d made his bed, and it was now time for him to lie in it.
Leave Him Alone!
Soon, their mom heard them arguing. Thankfully, though, she was on OP’s side.
OP wrote, “Our mom heard us arguing and told him to leave me alone. My money was earned with hard work, and I don’t have to share.”
He’s Not Getting Anything
After their confrontation, OP reached out to his two other brothers. He learned that he’d also been asking them for money, but they, too, told him to “get bent.”
It’s Not My Fault
OP noted that it would seem like it was unfair. However, it was the choice his brother made.
He wrote, “He chose to party with his money. It’s not my fault that the world went nuts for a couple of years.”
