Her Family
OP’s (Original Poster) dad recently passed away, and he had no other family apart from her and her younger brother.
She had always made a conscious effort and choice to be there for him because he was her dad, and she loved him.
Their Close Relationship
Because of that, the two had always been close. Though they lived apart, she called him most evenings for a quick chat and would also try to see him once a week for coffee.
It was a one-hour drive to his house from her place, but that never stopped her.
Her Brother
On the flip side, her brother was anything but. He made no effort to be there for their dad despite living and working in the same town as him.
He was also only 10 minutes away!
He Was Never There for Him
Apart from that, her brother never called their dad, nor did he try to spend time with him.
She wrote, “Before he passed, he called Dad to go out for a drink with him and then stood him up. It broke my heart.”
Father and Son
In an edit, OP explained that her dad and brother were never close, but it was not their father’s fault. He tried to mend his relationship with his son.
However, her brother not reciprocating his feelings eventually made her dad so upset. He believed that his son wasn’t interested in maintaining a relationship, so he also gave up.
Her Inheritance
Because of her dad’s issue with her brother, he “basically left everything” to OP—the car, the house, and all worldly possessions.
It was not a surprise because her dad had talked to her about it before. However, she’d always hoped that her brother would make an effort to mend their relationship so he could be on the will, too, but he never did.
An Upset Brother
Despite his actions toward his family, it seemed like OP’s brother had always expected to get 50% of the inheritance. So, when he found out that only OP got the assets, he got “angry and very upset.”
What Do You Plan to Do?
He confronted OP, asking if she planned to give him anything. However, OP only said that she needed to think about it.
Even so, deep down, she didn’t want to do it.
Bond Between Siblings
She mentioned that she and her brother had never been particularly close either. She didn’t want this to become a starting point of an argument or an issue when they attended the same family functions.
