This Redditor had been babysitting for the same family for years. She got along well with the children, but after telling a friend that she didn’t like kids, she got fired!
Dedicated to Babysitting
OP (Original Poster) is a 22-year-old woman in college who has been working as a babysitter for the same family for the past two years. She had never had any complaints and would always babysit for the family after she got out of school.
Wishy-Washy Sentiments
One day, OP’s curious friend asked her via text messages what it was like to work with children. She said it wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad either.
Resisting Tirades
OP told her friend that children were challenging and that you had to have good self-control.
“Children can be tiring. You just have to control yourself and don’t let tantrums get under your skin; it is gonna be fine,” she explained.
Hidden Personal Feelings
OP told her friend that even though she isn’t someone who loves children, she had worked for two years with no complaints.
She cited this as proof that she understands how to “deal with kids” and not let her personal feelings interfere with her work.
Telling It Like It Is
The text conversation OP had with her friend was giving her raw, unfiltered opinions about her job.
She didn’t think any more about it for the next two weeks and continued babysitting as she had always done.
Blowing Up Her Phone
Two weeks after OP’s text conversation with her friend, her phone was charging while caring for the children. She started getting multiple notifications while the phone was not in her hands.
Her employer, the mom of the kids she babysat, had noticed her phone getting text-bombed, so she opened it up.
The Secret Is Out
The mother happened to know her PIN code since OP had given her phone to the children to play with in the past.
The kids’ mother then took screenshots of OP’s conversation with her friend and sent them to herself before she left for work.
Left in the Dark
OP had no clue that anything of the sort had happened. She just went on with the rest of her day as usual.
It wasn’t until she got home that she realized something was wrong.
Worked for Nothing
OP discovered that she hadn’t been paid yet. She waited a while to see if the payment would come through but eventually contacted the mother about the payment issue.
An Awful Human Being
When OP questioned whether or not she was getting paid, the mother sent her the screenshots she had stolen from her phone. She said that OP was an “awful human being.”
Kicked to the Curb and Penniless
The mother continued her tirade in text messages and said that OP didn’t “deserve money” and that she didn’t “wanna see her in the house again.”
OP accepted this but still wanted to be paid, and she wondered if she should report or sue the mother.
Being Used and Thrown Away
OP pointed out that the mother could have fired her as soon as she saw the texts. Instead, she waited until after OP was done watching the kids that night before revealing what he had discovered and what she had done.
Not All Children
OP also reiterated that she never said she hated the children she was watching. She just didn’t like children in general, but she had gone two years watching these children with no problems.
Didn’t Need That Job Anyway
OP got a new job right after being fired but felt like the mother had used her. She never did anything wrong with the children, nor would she, and she would like to get paid for services rendered.
Because of this, OP’s friend echoed her thoughts, also recommending she report her previous employer for refusing to pay her and especially waiting after she finished work so she could “benefit from her presence as much as she could.”
The Community’s Take on the Matter
Redditors unanimously said she wouldn’t be the a**hole if she reported the mother.
One commenter also pointed out that she could sue her, saying, “Not the a**hole. Your personal feelings about children did not impact your job performance. This woman is trying to weasel out of paying you. Figure out how much she owes you and whether taking her to small claims court to get payment will be worth it. I think you can recover your court costs if you go that route. In the future, be careful with your phone. Good luck.”
Another Redditor said, “Absolutely not the a**hole. It’s also crazy because she just burned a bridge she had over nothing. OP seems like they were a good, consistent sitter for two whole years, and this woman throws it away over a very normal conversation. Incredibly short-sighted, but this, on top of going into OP’s phone in the first place, means she was toxic, and OP is lucky to get out now. Make sure you get your money, though!”
Mess Around and Find Out
Other commenters noted that there was something else going on here.
“Not the a**hole, and I would report her too. This is a theft,” said one user.
Another Redditor agreed, saying, “What she did with your phone could be seen as a crime, depending on your residence. She violated your privacy and stole your private information using AirDrop. I don’t drink. I worked as a bartender during graduate school. By her reasoning, I should not have received compensation for my work because I don’t like alcohol. Refusing to pay for agreed services rendered is a crime.”
What do you think? Would OP be wrong for suing the mother to receive her pay?
