His Boss Belittled Him, Called Him “Unprofessional,” and Threatened to “Make His Last Week Hell” After He Sent in His One-Week Notice. So, He Had to Teach Him a Lesson!

This Redditor just quit his job, as he needed to take care of his mental health and overall happiness first. But he never expected how badly his line manager would react to him leaving!

Job Hopping

When OP’s (Original Poster) job application got accepted, he gave his current workplace his one-week notice. He knew it was a bad time because it was also his line manager’s last week at work.

Prioritizing Himself

Even so, for OP, it was important that he pushed through with it. He mentioned that his mental health and overall happiness had taken a hit.

So, after everything he’s been through, he now knows he must focus on himself. He said that he is “more important than a job.”

Having “The Talk”

When his line manager called and sat him down, he thought it would be a “productive conversation” on why he was leaving. However, it was anything but productive.

His Manager’s Accusations

OP’s manager started to “rip into him.” He called OP “unprofessional” and tried to “attack his character.”

He said OP was stepping down to do less work since he’s going from a head bartender to a senior role. However, OP said the new place he would be working at was far busier and paid more.

More Negative Thoughts

His manager also discussed OP’s work ethic and said it was “not up to standard.” However, OP noted that they just had his six-month probation chat the week before, and his manager said he was “passing all standards and doing a good job.”

He was told what he did was comparable to being a “journeyman.” OP wrote, “He also said he was pretty much going to make my last week of work hell and give me all the s***** jobs to do.”

The Company Ethos

OP was taken aback and caught off guard. He said the company ethos was “work hard and be nice to people,” but his manager proved it was all “bulls***.”

He said, “The company is also in the UK’s top companies to work for, so even more surprising behavior.”

Sending In His Complaints

OP wasn’t going to just let it go. So, he “complained” to HR and his general manager.

Because of this, his line manager now “has a disciplinary to go through.” Additionally, he was transferring restaurants in the company to another site in the city, and everyone would know what he did.

Bullying and Harassment

In a way, OP made sure something like this wouldn’t happen again to anyone.

He said, “Someone who claims to live and breathe the company will now have that on his record—that he has bullying and harassment allegations.”

Adding Salt to the Wound

OP also wanted the transition to be as hard as possible for his line manager.

He wrote, “I’ve called in sick every day, so I hope he’s been overworked and stressed out. He wanted so badly to leave a good handover for whenever they hire a new bar manager; now he won’t, as he has to organize moving cities on top of making sure everything is in order at work. The team is probably overworked and tired. That is his fault.”

Listen to Yourself!

OP ended his story by sharing a snippet of a conversation he had with his line manager a couple of weeks before this story was posted. The discussion itself was irrelevant to this story, but he said something that made a lot of sense to OP now.

OP shared, “He told me, ‘Let stupid people talk,’ implying stupid people will keep talking until they say even more stupid stuff. I did indeed let a stupid person talk.”

The Community’s Suggestions

Some users had similar experiences and flocked to the comments section to share them.

This person shared, “I gave my two weeks’ notice to a manager that hated me. He was looking for every reason to get rid of me. He finally blew up and came into my office and told me I was fired. I told him I gave him two weeks, so he has to pay me, to which he replied, ‘We’ll see about that.’ I went home and got two weeks off before my new job and got my final two weeks’ pay.”

Another Redditor said, “Similar thing happened to me on one of my first jobs working at a grocery store. I put in my two weeks, and my manager accepted it and thanked me for my time there and everything. Then when working a shift a couple of days later, a different manager, who didn’t really like me for some reason, and was above my manager, came to me and told me that I could go home for the night and that ‘it was slow,’ little did I know that he told the general manager that I left without telling anyone, so they ‘fired me.’”

It’s Not a Choice

Redditors also brought up the fact that resignations aren’t requests; they’re notices.

“I never understood the whole concept of accepting a resignation. The employer has no choice or anything to accept as it’s not a request; it’s a notice. We aren’t slaves here as much as it feels like it,” said one user.

Finding a Way Around the System

It seems the community doesn’t appreciate how badly employees are treated. So, they shared some clever examples of what one can do to find a way around the system.

This person said, “My friend had his leave set up months in advance for about 20 days. He had been looking for a new job for the past year, and just before he went on leave, he got an offer and gave his one-month notice. He worked two days, is on leave now, and will return right as his new job starts. His boss was really s***** to him, so well deserved.”

They Have No Right to Stop You

Redditors also pointed out that even if employers or managers refuse to accept one’s resignation notice, they have no right to stop them from leaving.
