This Redditor approached his boss, asking for a raise. However, aside from being turned down, his boss also retaliated by making him work more hours!
Having Thursdays Off

Around six months before OP (Original Poster) shared his story, he mentioned that his job started giving Thursdays off because it was the slowest day of the week.
So, he did all the work he had to do every Thursday on Wednesday. He said, “Other than the lower paycheck, everything was good.”
I Deserve a Raise

Then, two months before posting on the thread, he asked his boss for a raise.
He said he sent his boss, the co-owner of the company, an email asking for a “little more money.”
His Options

OP said the email had around five paragraphs, and he ended by giving his boss an ultimatum.
He wrote, “It ended with me saying I understood if he couldn’t do it, but if not, then I would start looking for a new job.”
He Didn’t Even Think

However, his boss immediately shut him down!
OP said he didn’t think about it, nor did he discuss the matter with his wife, the company’s other co-owner.
A Furious Boss

Instead, less than a minute after he sent the email, his boss called him and “screamed” at him for asking him for a raise.
Then, his wife threw a “hissy fit” for three weeks because OP was considering leaving.
Job Hunting

Because of his bosses’ response, OP decided to start job hunting.
He wrote, “In April, I began a job hunt and eventually got hired by a company that wanted me so badly that they bent over backward to get me to come to work for them, and I have a start date of June 12.”
I Needed Time

OP clarified that he couldn’t leave immediately because he had bills to pay. He added that there were “complications on both sides,” and June 12 was the perfect date for all parties involved.
Even though he already had a job offer, he didn’t decide to leave his job right away.
The Ball’s in Your Court

Instead, OP told his boss about it and said he was taking a week to think about things. He expected his boss to at least ask him to stay.
His boss never brought it up nor discussed it with him. He wrote, “He never once either made me an offer to stay or even ask what it would take for me to stay, so I took the job offer and put in my three-week notice.”
His Punishment

When they found out OP had decided to leave, they were upset, resulting in OP’s boss “punishing” him. The day before this story was posted, OP’s boss called him and ordered him to work every Thursday for three weeks until he left.
He wrote, “Part of my punishment for leaving for more money is that he has since given me more money.”
Daily Responsibilities

Because OP finishes up all his work for Thursdays every Wednesday, he “literally has nothing to do.”
He said, “So, I am complying with his demand that I work by sitting in my office and reading a book I haven’t had a chance to and getting paid to do so.”
Unexpected Words

Then, his boss told him that when they hired OP a year prior, they had expected him to work with them “either until retirement or when the company went out of business.”
OP didn’t know how to respond and just stared at him.
Adding Another Punishment

Another thing OP’s boss did as his “punishment” was to limit his calls to him to two to three times a day. He explained that before the issue, his boss used to call him 25 times a day.
So, it’s safe to say that OP was relieved to find out about this “punishment.”
The Community’s Pieces of Advice

The community suggested a humorous way for OP to spend his time.
One said, “Maybe do a little overtime today as well. I mean, it could take hours to do nothing.” Another commented, “I’d be highly tempted to spend the week making copies of everything, misfiling it, and stapling it. Glue may be needed.”
Good for You!

Redditors also said that OP was being “punished” with a good time.
This Redditor commented, “All I see are positives for you in this scenario.”
You Really Should Leave

Some also noted that OP’s stuck in a toxic work environment and should leave immediately.
One man said, “Honestly? After someone calls you to yell at your audacity to request more compensation, I would not stick around. You are just asking for more grief. Just rip the bandaid off and continue on.”
What do you think of what happened to OP? What would you do if you were in his shoes?
