Mandatory Family Trips
Every year, OP’s (Original Poster) family plans a huge vacation together. This trip included her mom, sister, brother, sister-in-law, daughter, son-in-law, grandchild, and, of course, her and her husband.
They also have open invitations to other relatives.
Some Slight Problems
For 2023, OP’s family wanted to go to an all-inclusive resort in Aruba. Everything was already settled, and tickets were bought.
OP doesn’t mind going on a vacation with her family, but she has some reservations about the people who are coming.
Mom’s Health Issues
To start with, OP’s mother, who’s elderly, hasn’t really taken the best care of her body. So, now, she has weight problems, which affect her ability to walk.
Her condition has also caused sleep apnea, which means she can’t walk very far without taking a lot of breaks and will fall asleep anywhere.
Catering To Her Physique
It’s actually not a problem. However, when they plan an activity requiring physical fitness, OP’s mom discourages them from doing it since she can’t stand them having fun without her.
Because of that, they end up scraping their plans and just pursue whatever activity her mom feels she’s able to do.
Mama’s Boy
Another issue is OP’s brother, who wants to go but can’t afford it. He’d usually sponge off her mom to find a way to come with them.
Usually, things would go as his brother planned, where his tickets are bought, and everything else is paid for.
Spending for Two Extra Adults
However, after that, OP’s mom will have some kind of emergency where they need to help her out. So, OP and her husband end up giving her close to, if not more than, the cost for OP’s “deadbeat” brother to go.
OP added, “And then we spend the rest of the vacation paying for him and mom through meals, tickets to attractions, and anything else that tickles their fancy.”
Chaotic Preparations
As days go by and they get closer to their family vacation, OP gets rumblings of her mother needing the money for house repairs, and then her brother has to resign from his job because his boss won’t let him off. Aside from that, OP’s daughter and son-in-law booked the honeymoon suite.
OP wrote, “As all this is going down and we confirm flights, accommodations, and excursions, I just nod my head and agree.”
Separate Directions
On the day of the trip, they all went to the airport and got through security. As the whole family turned left to go to their gate, OP and her husband turned the opposite way.
Everyone then started asking them where they were going, if they were getting food, and if they could bring some for the others.
Different Plan
So, OP turned to them and informed them she and her husband would be going on a cruise out of Miami and that they’d see them in a couple of weeks.
No One to Rely On
With that, OP’s daughter got angry, asking who would watch her baby while she and her husband enjoyed their second honeymoon. OP’s mother was also asking who would pay for her during the trip, and OP’s brother looked dumbfounded, “as if he had just lost his pet.”
OP wrote, “They all start to tell me how I am ruining their vacation, and I am an a**hole and stuff. So, internet, please pass judgment and let me know, am I the a**hole?”
