Two Sisters and Two Babies
OP (Original Poster) is a 28-year-old mom who just had her first baby two months before this story was posted. On the other hand, her sister is 33 and just had her third baby less than a week before this story was published.
Falling in Love With France
When OP was 18, she came to France on an exchange program. She fell in love with the country and decided to attend college there.
This is also where she met her husband, and in the end, she moved to France permanently.
Bitter Sister
Unfortunately, OP’s sister wasn’t supportive. She “hated” that OP left the United States to move to another country.
OP wrote, “She took any opportunity she could to trash talk France, trash talk ‘socialism and communism,’ trash talk my husband and his family, etc. It got to the extent that I went low contact with her.”
Impressive Healthcare System
When OP gave birth, her parents came to France to stay with her for a month. OP’s mom was “very impressed” by the fact that they paid nothing to have their baby.
All the Free Stuff
France’s healthcare system was so good that even OP’s preventative dentist appointment was free.
She wrote, “I didn’t have to pay for my checkups, my mandatory lab work, the birth itself, the hospital stay, and some postnatal care that includes pelvic floor rehab.”
Costing Thousands
Many people are saying how bad America’s healthcare system is. However, this was just proven by OP’s conversation with her mom.
Per OP’s mom, the same treatments in the United States would have cost her tens of thousands of dollars!
Sister’s Health Scare
OP’s parents then left and went directly to her sister’s. She needed help because she had a health scare, and they planned on staying with her until she gave birth.
They were also staying for a while after to help her sister with her other kids.
Sending Her Congratulations
Although they were not on the best of terms, OP called to congratulate her sister after she gave birth. She also sent her a gift!
Unfortunately, OP noted that her sister was “p****” even then.
It Just Isn’t Fair!
The day before this story was posted, OP’s sister called her, telling her that her hospital bills were over $20,000 because of some complications.
Her sister told her it wasn’t fair that she didn’t pay anything at all. OP wrote, “Apparently, my mom kept bringing up the fact that it was free for me.”
Cover My Bills for Me!
OP’s sister told her that since she didn’t have to spend a cent, she could “afford to help her.”
Her sister said that by doing this, she, too, could afford to stay with her kid instead of going back to work as soon as possible.
I Can, but I Won’t
OP noted that she could afford to send her sister some money. However, she refused to do so “purely because of how much she looked down on OP’s decision to move to France and marry a French man.”
A Rift Between Sisters
So, OP told her that she couldn’t help. She shared, “All I told her is, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. But you are free to come give birth to your next child here. Even as a foreigner, it won’t cost you more than $3,000.’”
OP’s sister was furious and accused her of being a “condescending a**hole.” She also threatened to go no contact.
