This woman is at a loss for what to do after being emotionally blackmailed by her relatives. Should she give up the apartment and life insurance her late mom left her?
Late Mom
OP (Original Poster) is a 25-year-old woman with a 35-year-old brother. Sadly, their mom recently passed away after battling with cancer.
Living Situation
She had lived in the apartment her mom had bought for the past seven years. OP shared, “She always told me that when she died, she wanted me to have it because she worked so hard to ensure I always had somewhere to live.”
Inheriting the Place
So, when their mom died, OP found out that their mom left the apartment to her in her will. There were no issues between the two siblings.
After all, OP said, “He makes more than enough of his own money and actually owns an apartment in the same building.”
Can’t Say the Same for Her Aunts
However, the same could not be said about OP’s aunts. One of her aunts, whom she refers to as A in this story, has had financial issues since OP could remember, and her mom had always been helping her out financially.
Her other aunt, whom she calls B in the post, is financially stable but does not make enough to help A out.
Unsolicited Opinions
OP shared that both of her aunts think she should let A stay in the apartment she inherited from her mom. The reason is that OP made enough money, which would allow her to afford rent.
They said that that was what her late mom would have wanted.
I Disagree
However, OP said no. She said, “I said no, stating that my mother wanted me to have a place of my own.”
She’s saving all the money she intended to use for rent to buy her own place in the future.
Demanding More
When her aunts heard her decision, they asked her to share some of the money her late mom left her. OP mentioned her mom had two life insurance policies, which went to her and her brother.
Apart from that, their mom also left them her house and car.
Is It Unfair?
OP added that she and her brother got everything their mom had. No one else from their family got anything.
She said, “My aunts feel that this was wrong and that they, especially A, deserve some of the money.”
Brother’s Stance
It turns out that their two aunts also tried coaxing her brother to give them money or some share of the inheritance. But her brother had blocked both of them on all platforms!
He had suggested that OP do the same. However, she feels guilty about cutting off her own family.
It Was Her Choice
Even with her aunts demanding a share, OP said, “I also feel strongly that if my mother wanted them to get money, she would have left them something. But she didn’t.”
She reiterated that her mom had left everything for her and her brother.
I Know My Mom
Her aunts tried to blackmail her emotionally, saying their mom only left everything to her and her brother because she knew OP would share. However, OP said she knew her mom.
She wrote, “She would have told me if she wanted me to do that. All she said was that she wanted to die knowing that me and my brother would be able to support ourselves.”
Questions in Her Mind
Now, OP is left with asking whether she was wrong to keep the apartment and the money from her mom’s life insurance for herself.
She wrote, “I told A that I wouldn’t be giving her any money from my inheritance or allowing her to stay in my apartment. I think this might make the a**hole because I don’t need all the money I inherited and can afford to rent a place myself.”
The Community’s Thoughts
People wanted OP to erase any negative thoughts from her mind. They tried to comfort her, saying that everything her mom left her was rightfully hers.
One said, “There is absolutely no way you’re the a**hole in this situation.” Another wrote, “Your aunt is greedy and possessive, and you should copy your brother. Don’t feel guilty, and don’t give up.”
The Only Way to Move Forward
Users also called out her aunts for being toxic and gave OP advice on moving forward.
“Sorry for your loss, but I’m afraid the only way forward is to cut your toxic aunties out of the picture, as your brother did,” said one user. Then, another Redditor shared, “There’s a backstory here that the mother never shared and the aunts don’t want to talk about. There’s a darn good reason why the mother didn’t leave even a token amount to those two. We’ll never know what it was, but her intentions were clear. Not the a**hole.”
What advice would you give her? What do you think of her greedy aunts?
