She Refused to Give Her Siblings Half of the Hefty Inheritance She Received, Although They Insisted They Needed It More. They’re Livid, but They’re Just Greedy “Leeches” Sucking Her Dry

This Redditor’s siblings harassed her into sharing her inheritance to help them pay for medical and living expenses. She refused, and now they’re all torn apart!

Dearly Departed

Everything started with the death of OP’s (Original Poster) grandmother. When she died, she left a sizable inheritance to the family.

OP, 33, and her 2 siblings, a 35-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man, also got a share from their grandmother’s estate. When they received it, they started to discuss how to distribute the inheritance fairly.

As the conversations continued, OP’s siblings suggested that maybe she should share her portion of the inheritance. When OP showed hesitance, those suggestions turned into insistence.

OP’s siblings believed she should do it because they “needed it more than she did.”

Let the Guilt-Tripping Begin

The arguments intensified, and OP’s brother brought up the fact that his three-year-old child, Lily, had a heart condition called Supravalvular Aortic Stenosis, which required expensive treatments and specialized surgery not covered by insurance.

Her brother noted that he and his wife struggled to cover these “immense costs.”

Unfortunate Circumstances

On top of that, OP’s sister, Sarah, had recently fallen into hard times. Sarah had lost her job and had undergone a “home repair disaster that drained her savings.”

She was in a “dire financial situation,” which added to the pressure OP felt to help.

Caving In

With all the mounting reasons, OP finally caved and agreed to give her siblings a small portion of her inheritance to help with the medical bills and Sarah’s financial issues. However, that didn’t appease her siblings.

Instead, OP’s siblings pushed for more and more.

Greed Sets In

Eventually, her siblings reached a point where they wanted precisely half of her inheritance. They wanted to leave OP with just a fraction of what she’d initially received!

A Brewing Storm

OP started to feel upset at how demanding her siblings were. It seemed like they always wanted more, more, more!

As OP felt increasingly overwhelmed and pressured by her siblings’ demands, she finally decided enough was enough.

She stood her ground and told them no.

Hard-Earned Money

OP noted she had worked hard to be financially stable. So, for her, it wasn’t fair that her siblings expected her to give up most of her inheritance.

Sure, it was terrible that her three-year-old niece had a medical condition and that Sarah was undergoing financial woes. None of that was her fault, though.

Lashing Out

OP admitted that her anger got the best of her.

Frustrated, she shouted, “You’re just a bunch of leeches! You’ve always been terrible with money, and now you’re trying to suck me dry, just like you always do!”

Sorry Not Sorry

OP knew she’d gone too far and apologized for her harsh words.

However, even though she regretted voicing the words out loud, OP secretly does feel like her siblings are just being greedy.

Given So Much

OP had always been there for her siblings. She had helped pay their rent when they couldn’t, covered their credit card bills from a shopping spree they couldn’t afford, and even lent them money to help buy a car.

It didn’t seem right for her siblings to make her out to be the selfish bad guy after everything she had done for them over the years.

Redditors’ Two Cents

Redditors echoed the sentiment that OP had been entirely too nice for her own good.

One commenter said, “Not the a**hole. They are leeches, and all things aside, why did you pay for their shopping sprees? I get their rent, but their shopping sprees—should have put your foot down there.”

“Not the a**hole. You should consider blocking them temporarily for your own mental health. Stop allowing them to gaslight and manipulate you. You’ve been their doormat for too long. Stop enabling leech behavior,” echoed another user.

Helpful Reminders

Other Redditors pointed out that OP should hire help in splitting the inheritance.

One user said, “You might want to consider getting an estate lawyer involved so that everything is distributed fairly. It will cost money, so if your siblings complain, tell them either it’s split fairly, or they will have to pay to have it done.”

Setting Boundaries

Some also advised OP to put a stop to things now. If she gives in again, who knows when it’ll ever end?

“Not the a**hole. While their situations are very unfortunate, you each got an equal share, which means they would have gotten a payment each to tide them over through their issues. The fact they immediately guilt-tripped you makes me think they see you as a pushover. Stand your ground and tell your siblings they need to work out their own problems because your money is your money. If they manipulate you and pull the whole, ‘Oh, but you don’t love us,’ then maybe you’re better off being low contact since, clearly, their love is conditional,” someone said.

Another woman chimed in, saying, “You’ve already given them too much. Just take your equal share of the inheritance and invest it for your retirement or put it somewhere where you won’t have access the next time that they concoct a crisis. If they don’t have money to care for their kid’s medical needs, you can help by pointing them toward social service agencies that can help someone with low income.”

What do you think? Should OP have split her inheritance with her siblings, or was she selfish for not helping them out?
