Her Entitled Sister Demanded the Lion’s Share of the Family’s $900,000 Inheritance, Saying Their Wealthy Brother’s Only Child Didn’t Need It. But She Refused, Thinking Everything Should Be Divided Equally!

All she ever wanted was to be just and fair with the inheritance her parents intended to leave their family. However, her sister doesn’t think the same way!

Introducing the Siblings

OP (Original Poster), a 32-year-old woman, has an older sister named Sara, who’s 39, and an older brother, John, who’s 35. Among all of them, OP is the only one who doesn’t have children.

Their Own Families

Sara and her husband, Alec, aged 49, have 4 children: Anna, Alec’s 20-year-old daughter from his first marriage; Ben, a 6-year-old; Charlie, a 4-year-old girl; and Daisy, who’s 2.

Then, John and his wife, Bethany, who’s 35, have a daughter named Eleanor, who’s 4.

A Plan for Their Parents’ Home

OP and her siblings have already agreed to sell their parents’ house when they die. She’s hoping that won’t happen for another 20 to 30 years at the very least, especially since they were young parents.

However, they had already devised this plan because the house is in a remote part of their country, and OP and her siblings are already reasonably well-established in their respective cities. They also have “no desire” to move to the countryside.

The Trusted One

So, as early as now, OP and her dad discussed the best way to divide her parents’ estate since she is the executor of their will.

She wrote, “We decided that their life insurance policies will cover funeral costs, and the rest will go into their local township. The problem came when we tried to figure out how to best split up the money that comes from their home.”

Equal Shares

OP’s parents bought their house for $360,000, now worth $900,000. OP thought that the fairest and most equal way would be to split the initial amount her parents bought the home for in 3 ways so that she and her siblings would get $120,000 each.

Something for Their Kids, Too

She also figured that the remaining $540,000 could be evenly distributed to her nieces and nephews, where each of them could get approximately $108,000. It was the most logical solution for OP, and her father agreed.

When OP and her father discussed the plan with Sara and John, Sara was unhappy.

OP explained that her brother and his wife are quite wealthy. When her sister-in-law was younger, she had a traumatic experience and got a “several million-dollar settlement” from it.

Sara then argued that John and Bethany would never have to worry about Eleanor’s tuition fees. She even pointed out that they could even afford to help their daughter buy a home one day.

For that reason, Sara thinks Eleanor should receive a smaller amount of the inheritance.

With that logic, OP argued back that since Anna is only a part of their family through marriage and not blood, she should also get a smaller portion of the inheritance.

OP added, “I definitely do not feel this way about Anna, but I was just trying to get my sister to see my reasoning. She still did not see it my way.”

Seeking Her Friends’ Advice

Until now, OP still believes it’s only fair to split the inheritance equally, but her friends are divided. Some agree with her, while some of them agree with Sara.

Her friends said that since Eleanor has more of a “head start” because of OP’s sister-in-law’s financial situation, she doesn’t need the money as much as OP’s other nieces and nephews.

OP admits that she sees Sara’s and her friends’ point. However, she also doesn’t want to single out Eleanor and make her feel inferior in any way.

Redditors’ Two Cents

The people on Reddit said Sara can’t do anything about the will since it is not her decision. Some even suggested that OP should lie to Sara and tell her that her kids are no longer left any amount.

According to the top commenter, “Not the a**hole. It’s your father’s will, so whatever he decides should be final. Sara can complain all she likes, but it’s not her choice. Maybe tell Sara that father has listened to her complaints and decided not to leave anything for the kids to make it even, that it’s all going to charity or something, and see how quickly Sara changes her tune after that.”

Split It Three Ways

Many people suggested that OP’s parents should just split the inheritance between the three of them: OP, her sister, and her brother.

“Not the a**hole. Ultimately, the inheritance has nothing to do with anyone’s net worth. That shouldn’t come into play. Either split it the way you and your father decided or just split it three ways between yourself and your siblings. Each sibling can give their kids a portion of their inheritance. See how that sits with Sara,” a commenter suggested.

Another person wrote, “Not the a**hole, but honestly, just split it among the siblings—your parents’ children—and exclude everyone else monetarily.”

Not Anyone Else’s Decision

Redditors also questioned OP why she had to ask her friends for advice and why others were meddling with her parents’ will.

Someone said, “Not the a**hole. This is ultimately your parents’ decision. Others can have an opinion, but it’s not their choice how the inheritance is split.”

Another commenter said, “What your parents do with their money, assuming they are following local laws on leaving money to children and spouses, is up to them. Why are you even discussing this with your friends? Cut that out. It’s none of their business. It’s not even really your siblings’ business or even yours. It’s completely up to your parents.”

What do you think? Is OP wrong for splitting the inheritance equally?
