She Refused Her Misogynistic Stepdad’s Demands of Giving Her Stepbrother Her College Fund. She’s Saving It for Her Ivy League Education, but Now Her Mom Says She’s a Jerk

OP (Original Poster) worked herself to the bone to get accepted into an Ivy League school. Now her mom, stepdad, and stepbrother are trying to take her dreams away from her!

OP is an 18-year-old who recently learned she had gotten into her dream school through an early decision. Additionally, it was an Ivy League school!

She and her parents were delighted with how things turned out. OP then explained that though their family was “not too well off,” her grandmother saved up money for her “only granddaughter’s college fund.”

OP mentioned it was “more than enough to fund her tuition.”

Stepbrother’s Gap Year

OP went on to explain how her 19-year-old stepbrother, Damon, took a so-called gap year and is going to college at the same time as OP.

Damon is going to a college less costly than OP’s.

Forced Into It

However, OP explained that Damon was only going to college because of his dad’s “incessant nagging.”

To add, while everyone thought Damon took a gap year, the fact of the matter is that he failed.

Stepdad’s Demands

So, OP’s parents, particularly her stepdad, started “bugging” her about giving Damon some of her college fund.

She wrote, “I don’t want to, or else I’ll have debt after graduation, and it will shatter all my financial planning after college.”

Her Breaking Point

However, even with her stepdad’s persistence, OP only broke down the night before this story was posted while she and her family had dinner.

OP’s stepdad asked again during their meal, and she said no. However, he turned to OP’s mom and said, “Well, anyway, Amaryllis is a girl. Why waste that much money on her college?”

That’s It!

Upon hearing this, OP started yelling at her stepdad.

She yelled, “You know what? I’ve had enough. First of all, it is not even your money to decide what the f*** to do with it. It’s the money my grandma left for my college tuition. Besides, my gender doesn’t define my intelligence.”

Just Accept It

To taunt her further, Damon smirked at her. He said that OP needed to accept he was smarter than her, and he said this while grinning.

Losing Control

OP had had it, and she lost control of her emotions.

She said, “At least I have plans and ambitions, unlike Damon, who told everyone he took a gap year when he actually failed.”

Walking Out

After she shouted this, her stepdad and Damon stormed off.

She was left with her mom, but instead of siding with her, her mom told OP she was an a**hole.

The Community’s Thoughts

Redditors reassured OP and told her she didn’t do anything wrong. Even her getting mad was within her rights!

“Not the a**hole. It’s your money. You actually got into an Ivy League, unlike Damon. And it sounds as if you know enough not to insult someone when you’re asking them for a favor, again, unlike Damon. Your mother is an a**hole, too, though. She should have your back,” wrote a top commenter.

Your Mom’s the Main Villain

As the top commenter said, people called OP’s mom out for not having her daughter’s back.

This Redditor wrote, “While the stepdad and Damon are like the mustache-twirling villains of this post, the real problem is actually OP’s mom. She should be protecting OP’s future and her college fund. She should be standing up for OP when her husband and stepson insult her daughter. She should have intervened on OP’s behalf before it got to the point where OP blew up and responded to their baseless bullying with cold hard facts. And she should never call her daughter an a**hole for standing up for herself. Not the a**hole, if it’s not obvious. The s***** stereotypical stepdad and stepbrother are absolutely a**holes, but the mom is an a**hole and a failure of a parent.”

A woman said, “The mom has no backbone, and she should be ashamed of herself for not standing up for her daughter. Go to school, build on your dreams, and cut them off! Not the a**hole.”

You’re Not an ATM

People also told OP to be vigilant and watch out for herself.

This person said, “There are far too many of them out there who are like that, who just see their kids the same way most people view a piggy bank. It’s better to be too cautious than to be left wishing you’d done more in cases like this.” Another user wrote, “Seriously, her family blows. OP, please make sure no one else has access to your account. I wouldn’t put it past Mommy Dearest and your stepdad to ‘borrow’ money.”

What’s Wrong With Them?

Redditors are concerned with how everyone in OP’s family acted. It seems each of them did something wrong here, trying to aggravate OP.

One Redditor wrote, “What really boggles my mind is how did the stepdad and Damon expect her to react? Just, ‘Oh jeez. I guess I should give you my entire college fund then since I’m just a poor widdle girlie with no brains.’ I honestly think this is just what narcissists do when they realize they’re losing control of their victims. I think OP’s stepdad and stepbrother are the same way. They don’t really expect her to give up her college fund; they just want to get their last digs on while they can because they know she’s going places and won’t ever be under their thumb like this again.”

What do you think of what OP’s going through? What advice would you give her?
