Her boyfriend asked her to let him borrow $5,000 for his son’s surgery. She was worried about them, but it was too much money for someone she had known for only three months!
Her New Beau
Three months before posting this story, OP (Original Poster), a 32-year-old woman, met her boyfriend, who’s 36, at the airport of the new city she moved in. He’s a single dad of 2 children, who are 6 and 12.
A Secret Relationship
Though she wanted to, OP had never met her boyfriend’s kids yet. For his kids’ mental health, he said it would be too early for them to meet her, and she understood that.
Despite this fact, OP sends them gifts every weekend, which she admitted were “a bit costly.” However, her boyfriend assured her he’d eventually tell his kids where the gifts came from.
Tending to His Son’s Needs
At some point, OP’s boyfriend didn’t contact her for a whole week; there were no calls or replies. Then, after a while, her boyfriend reached out to her and said his son was in the hospital for an injury.
OP wrote, “I felt bad for him. I can afford to visit, but he said there was no need for me to do this but suggested I send gifts instead as a way to cheer him up.”
A Huge Request
Later, OP’s boyfriend called her, saying he was busy all day trying to come up with the money to pay for his son’s surgery. They talked some more, and then he asked if she could lend him $5,000 to help pay for the surgery.
His Go-to Person?
OP was caught off guard by her boyfriend’s request. He said he felt “so heavy” asking for such a thing, but he had no one else willing to help but her.
Her Hard-Earned Money
In all honesty, OP was hesitant to say yes because she worked hard to save up the money in her account. She also feels uncomfortable letting go of $5,000 all at once.
A Tactic to Make Her Feel Guilty
Fortunately, her boyfriend told her it was fine if she didn’t feel comfortable. However, soon, he started bringing up the fact that he was in “dire need” of help.
He even told her the surgery needed to happen in the coming week, per the doctor’s recommendation.
A Promise in Exchange of Money
Because of that, OP started to feel pressured. But he promised that he would have her meet his sons right after the surgery, which OP thought to be great.
But then again, $5,000 is a lot of money.
You Can’t Get Everything You Want!
Eventually, OP refused her boyfriend’s request. He then got upset with her and kept saying how “cruel” she was and how little she cared about his children.
OP added, “I swore it wasn’t like this, but he hung up on me, saying he needed to get some fresh air.”
A Pitiful Situation
Afterward, her boyfriend sent her a photo of his son’s arm with an IV drip attached. When she saw it, OP felt emotional and cried.
She called him, but he did not respond.
A Friend’s Advice
OP feels guilty, but she still refuses to offer any monetary help. However, a friend of hers suggested that she should do it and have a contract in place to ensure she gets the money back.
Verifying His Story
OP is confident that what her boyfriend told her is true. But she’s been thinking of making a surprise visit to the hospital or asking around to see if his story is valid.
Due to some suspicious things that happened, she added, “I already confirmed that he’s a single dad. I did my own investigation, and it turned out that, yes, he’s a divorced single dad of two.”
The Community’s Take on the Matter
Redditors are convinced that OP is getting scammed and that she shouldn’t trust her boyfriend that quickly since she just met him three months ago.
The top commenter said, “Not the a**hole. You met this man three months ago. Honestly, it seems like you are being scammed. Don’t pay. Did he say what exactly is the health problem, and what is the surgery?”
“Not the a**hole, but honey, this screams scam. I’m all for the benefit of the doubt, but 3 months in does not warrant expensive gifts for children I have not met or $5,000 for surgery on one of the said children. ‘Then suggested I send gifts instead,’ that tells you how he sees you: a cash cow,” another commenter wrote.
It’s All a Lie!
The community also said that everything OP’s boyfriend told her, including him, is fake and that she is only being used for her money. Their advice is that she should ignore him and never talk to him again.
A Redditor wrote, “Not the a**hole, but I really hope this is fake, and you’re not this naive. This is a major scam. He’s not your boyfriend, and there are no kids. You were talked into giving this man gifts every weekend as a sort of test to see how gullible you are. You’ve proved this, so now he’s bypassing gifts and aiming for actual cash. Block this man and learn from this.”
Another one said, “Not the a**hole. Run. This is a scam. You have never met the kids. You don’t have proof they exist. He sent you a picture of an arm with an IV that could be anyone’s. After you said no, he started emotionally blackmailing you. You are also sending gifts to these kids every week. This whole post is one red flag after another. You send him that money, and you will never see it or him again.”
What do you think? If you were OP, would you lend your boyfriend $5,000?
