This Redditor never felt close with her half-sisters and mom’s family, so she refused to spend the inheritance she got from her dad on them. But now they accuse her of hoarding everything for herself!
A Product of an Affair
OP (Original Poster) is a product of an affair. Her mom was already married when she met her dad, but that didn’t stop them from having a relationship.
When her mom got pregnant, they decided to keep her but agreed that OP would spend most of her time with her dad. She would only visit her mom every few months.
Goodbye, Dad
When OP was 14, her dad suddenly passed away in a car accident. With no one to care for her, she moved in and stayed with her mom for six months.
However, after those six months, she went to live with her paternal grandparents, who stayed on the West Coast. She said she originally lived in New York City.
Spoiled Grandchild
Her grandparents adored her so much that they spoiled her from the day she moved in. OP said she got a nice car and spent over $3,000 monthly with no issues.
She shared, “This continued when I visited my family in NYC too. They would always come with me, and I would opt to stay in the hotel with them over my mom.”
Finding Out About Her Inheritance
When OP turned 18, she was informed about the inheritance her late dad left her. It was a life-changing amount.
Per OP, “It’s a huge amount of money, and I have been meeting with a financial advisor to invest and be able to live off of it for the rest of my life.”
Accidental Slip-Ups
The week before OP posted this story, she was at her mom’s place visiting her side of the family, and she accidentally let it slip that she had gotten an inheritance from her dad.
Needless to say, everyone was shocked. She said, “This immediately sent a shockwave through my mom’s family as none of them went to college or anything and worked minimum wage jobs.”
Spend Your Money on Us!
When she returned to their house the next day, she found out they had planned multiple things that OP knew they couldn’t afford with their own money. She said they planned luxury shopping, spa treatments, and more.
How Would You Pay?
OP then asked them how they planned to pay for those activities. They laughed at her, and OP shared in her post, “They figured that I was sharing my money with all of them, but I wasn’t.”
We’re Not Even Close
She shared that she was not close with anyone on her mom’s side of the family. She said, “My sisters aren’t even my sisters; they’re half-sisters.”
At the most, OP gifts her mom nice things. However, she doesn’t give the others as much because they had always “left her out” and said she was a “snob,” among other things.
You’re Being Greedy
OP explained that she didn’t plan on sharing the inheritance because it’s money she planned to live off of. They argued and said that OP could change their lives, but she was “greedy” by hoarding the money to herself.
She then offered to pay for their college education, but they didn’t want that.
Conflicts in the Family
After their argument, OP received texts from them saying that she was pretty privileged. They also reminded her that she could get more money from her grandparents.
Support From Her Grandparents
Even when everyone from her mother’s side of the family kept bugging her about the money, OP didn’t want to give in. Her grandparents supported her decision, though, especially since they knew how she was being treated there.
They also told her that her dad dreamed that she would “never have to work.”
What She Does With Her Time
In an edit, OP added that she wasn’t wasting away her life. She said, “I currently am volunteering at an animal rescue, so I’m not just sitting around and wasting my life.”
It Was My Mistake
She also admitted that she was wrong to tell them about the money. However, she also tried to defend herself by saying that she grew up with people and friends who also had the same amount of money.
OP wrote, “When I do mention my money, it’s usually nothing. Like all my friends have inheritance, and it’s something we joke about.”
I’ve Had Enough of Them
OP had also already had enough of them taunting her for the money she spent.
She said, “They also were making comments after I went shopping about using my grandparent’s money, and I kinda was done with it.”
The Community’s Suggestions
Overall, the community believed OP’s half-sisters had no right to her inheritance.
A Redditor sarcastically remarked, “Yeah, because spa treatments and luxury shopping are totally changing their lives. Not the a**hole; you’re under no obligation to share money with people you aren’t close with, OP.”
Live a Life With Purpose
Some were also concerned that OP seemed to have no plans to use the money to improve her life.
“You are not the a**hole for not sharing your inheritance, so just ignore any of your family’s guilt-tripping. But I would also urge you to not live a meaningless life with no purpose. Use your inheritance to study to enrich your mind, travel and try to learn new things. But most importantly, do try to find a job or work of some sort at least a few years down the road. Something that you enjoy doing. It’s always good to have a backup plan. It’s smart that you are already consulting with financial advisors, but you still need something to do that would help you in supporting yourself financially,” shared one user.
What do you think OP should do? What advice would you give her?
