This young Redditor got more than what she expected when her grandfather died. But now her older siblings are envious and want her to split her inheritance into three! What should she do?
Grandfather and Granddaughter Bond
OP (Original Poster) and her grandfather were as close as possible. They “always got along great” and did a lot of activities together—watched football, played cards or chess, visited the horse racetrack together, and more.
Hitting Her Hard
This is why OP was gutted when he died three months before this story was posted. She said, “His death hit me really hard because I used to spend so much time with him.”
The Assets She’ll Get
A week before this story was posted, OP received a letter from the probate court. The letter’s contents informed her that she would inherit her grandfather’s old house and most of his assets.
This fact was quite shocking, as she’s only 17.
The Rest of the Family
On the flip side, her parents inherited her grandpa’s apartment, where he lived in his last years. Her grandfather moved there to be closer to OP and her family.
Her older siblings, who were 22 and 24, also inherited something. But as far as she knew, it was only a “small part of his fortune.”
Unhappy Older Siblings
They immediately got upset when her older brother and sister found out about her inheritance.
OP wrote, “My brother and sister weren’t too happy when they heard that I had inherited my grandpa’s old house.”
She’s a Millionaire!
Her grandpa’s house is worth a huge amount of money. She mentioned that it’s worth over $2,000,000!
Greed Working Its Way In
Her older siblings are blinded by the money OP inherited. They explicitly told her that they wanted a share of what she got.
All the Pressure
The night before this story was posted, her older siblings visited and took her aside. At this point, they were trying to pressure OP into giving in.
They were both urging her to share her inheritance with them.
Mixed Thoughts
According to her older siblings, it was “unfair” that she got “so much more than they did.” Because of that, the only fair way to go about things was to split the money into three.
However, OP is reluctant to do so.
Getting the Parents Involved
Even though OP was uncomfortable, her older siblings kept pushing. They did so until their parents heard about what they were doing.
A Serious Conversation
OP’s parents sent her to her room while they talked with her older brother and sister.
She said, “I don’t know exactly what then happened, but I heard loud voices, and apparently, my siblings left the house furious.”
I’m Confused
OP can’t pinpoint why she didn’t want to split her inheritance.
On the one hand, she believes her grandpa wanted her to have it. But on the other, she’s not sure if she’s just being “greedy.”
What the Community Has to Say
For Redditors, OP shouldn’t feel bad about keeping her inheritance.
“Not the a**hole. You had a better relationship with your grandpa than they did, and the inheritance reflects that. Don’t budge on it. Your grandpa left it to you,” wrote a top commenter.
Go, Parents!
People also commended her parents for being firm in this situation.
One user said, “Also, wanna drop this here because OP’s parents sound like parents of the year for standing up for her.” Another agreed and said, “Right? When do we ever get parents actually saying something to the extent of ‘OP had a better relationship out of love. You just want money; back off!”
Shameless
Some users also said that her siblings might have already approached her parents first, and when they refused, they tried pressuring OP into agreeing.
This woman said, “I’m betting the older siblings went to Mom and Dad first, expecting them to force OP to share. And when they said no, they tried to guilt their teenage sister instead. Shameless.”
Should OP give in and share? What advice would you give her?
