This Redditor got caught in a family feud when his greedy relatives tried to get a hold of the inheritance his grandfather left him. Should he give in?
Problems Plaguing Their Family

OP’s (Original Poster) paternal grandfather passed away a year before this story was posted. However, their family problems are slowly coming to the surface.
His Grandfather

Per OP, his grandfather was a “rough man,” and his “family stayed away from him.” He said it wasn’t easy to be around him unless you found your way and tried to get along.
He shared, “He wasn’t mean, racist, or homophobic; he was just rough in his ways. He preferred to mind his own business and had a lot of trouble expressing himself or his feelings.”
The Family’s Past

OP’s grandfather wasn’t that rough and distant with his dad, uncles, and aunts. He was quite the opposite when they were growing up.
However, they never knew what had happened for him to flip the switch.
Their Bond

Fortunately, OP and his grandfather “found their way.” For him, it was both easy and challenging at the same time.
Both of them had to be direct, and his grandfather really tried. He’d never get a word of praise from him, nor would he play with or hug him.
Two Siblings and Their Grandpa

It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, but he saw how much effort his grandfather had put in.
OP wrote, “That’s how he was with me, and he was a bit more open with my sister.”
Estranged Relationships With Other Relatives

OP’s aunts, uncles, and cousins would visit them. However, they would only take their paternal grandmother out somewhere and never approach their grandfather.
He wrote, “My sister and I were the only ones who actually spent time with him and talked to him.”
Grandpa’s Surprise

Currently, OP and his family are facing lots of issues due to the inheritance his grandfather left.
He shared, “To everyone’s surprise, he had money and a bunch of properties.”
His Heirs

Though their grandfather left something to everyone, OP and his sister received most of it. Everyone else received a sum of money.
His aunts and uncles got more than his cousins, but it was “small compared to what he and his sister got.”
It Must Be Divided Equally!

Now his relatives are blasting him and his sister, claiming the inheritance should be split evenly between them.
However, OP strongly believed that his grandfather had his reasons.
Their Financial State

Per OP, he knew some of his relatives really needed more of what they received. On the other hand, some were just plain greedy.
He said, “I don’t know. I’m on the fence about it, but I’m inclined to not give them more of what they were given. I get my grandfather was difficult, but to me, there was no excuse to completely ignore him.”
Was It Contestable?

The morning this story was posted, OP visited his grandfather’s lawyer.
He mentioned that he and his sister weren’t trustees; everything was arranged through a lawyer. The lawyer also assured OP that the will was “practically impossible” for the family to challenge.
Following His Grandpa’s Wishes

In the end, OP decided to keep the money to himself.
He wrote, “I’m not going to give my extended family more of what they already got. It will kill the relationship we have, but it is what it is. I’m going to follow his will as he intended and thank him once I see him in my dreams.”
The Community’s Reactions

For Redditors, OP’s right to follow his grandfather’s wishes.
A woman wrote, “Not the a**hole. Your grandfather gave out his inheritance the way that he wanted to. That’s not your fault. Sounds like you and your sister were closest to him, and he appreciated it.”
Money Blinds People

Some users pointed out how money truly brings out the worst in people.
This person said, “Yeah, money is a real b****** when it comes to relationships. Really does a number on otherwise normal people.” Another person wrote, “Money makes family weird. You don’t owe them any explanations, and you definitely do not owe them anything you inherited.”
Do you think OP made the right choice? What would you like to tell him?
