One way they share their story with the world is through TikTok. It’s also through this platform that we get to revisit a young unnamed man’s heartbreaking story, which actually happened in 2010.
Start of the Heartbreak
The video featured an 18-year-old sharing what his mom said about him and his 18th birthday.
He said, “My mom basically said, ‘Once you turn 18, you’re on your own!’”
Sad Eyes
As he said this, you can see no other emotion in his eyes apart from heartbreak. He’s just absolutely devastated that this happened to him.
Finding His Way Home
He then said that he’d been in Salt Lake City since he’d been kicked out. He’s looking for a place to stay for the night to figure out how to return to California.
The 18-year-old said, “So, I’m here, about Salt Lake, finding a place to stay for the night or find my way back to California.”
Stranded and Alone
The man interviewing him asked if he was stranded in Salt Lake City. Sadly, the 18-year-old was, and he’d been left all alone.
Wasting No Time
He also asked the 18-year-old how long he’d been on the streets. The boy said it was his first day, and it was his birthday!
The 18-year-old said, “This is my first day. Today’s my 18th birthday.”
This Is Unacceptable!
The interviewer couldn’t understand how selfish the boy’s mom was. So, he once again confirmed what the 18-year-old just said.
He said, “Today’s your 18th birthday, and you’re out here homeless.” When the boy said yes, the interviewer couldn’t say anything but, “Oh my gosh.”
Plans Moving Forward
The video was then cut, and they moved on to the interviewer asking the boy about his plans.
He asked, “Do you have any idea where you’re headed? Just trying to get back? Or goals?”
One-Vision Man
The boy, however, had no other immediate plans apart from going back to his state—and hopefully going back home and finishing his studies.
The 18-year-old said, “Well, going back to California. That’s my main goal right now. I mean, once I get there, I hope to finish high school.”
Birthday Wishes
In a heartbreaking turn, the interviewer asked the boy about his wishes. He asked, “If you had three wishes, what would they be?”
Unlike typical answers you’d get from teens and young adults, the boy’s wishes are rooted in pain, longing, and heartbreak.
What Matters Most
The 18-year-old’s answers to the interviewer’s question all circle around his family.
He said, “That my father was still alive, to see my sisters, and to get home.”
What TikTokers Have to Say
To put it simply, TikTokers abhorred the 18-year-old’s mom, as well as any other parent who had the same mentality.
One said, “I don’t understand how parents can do this to their child.”
Another commented, “And those parents are wondering why the kids don’t visit them in the nursing home. I’m so sorry, honey.”

Others hoped that the 18-year-old would get to prove his mom wrong by being successful.
