This Redditor was asked to come in for an interview. However, after they made him wait for 20 minutes without any updates or reasons, he decided he’s had enough and just left!
A Place Close to Home

OP (Original Poster) wanted to find a school closer to his home. One day, a school called him after they saw his resume posted on Indeed.
He didn’t seek them out but thought it was an excellent opportunity.
Phone Interview

When he talked to the assistant principal through the call, he seemed “super excited” about OP’s skill set and “what he could bring to the classroom.”
So, OP was asked to go to the school for an in-person interview.
Waiting Game

OP’s in-person interview was scheduled on the day this story was posted, at 10 in the morning. He arrived on time and checked in with the receptionist.
He wrote, “And I wait. Waited and waited.”
The Clock Is Ticking

OP was understandably furious.
He said, “This isn’t a f****** doctor’s visit or a blind date. Someone could have let me know, ‘Hey, sorry we are running behind; thank you for waiting!’ or whatever.”
The Opposite

None of that ever happened. OP shared that the place was “practically empty,” though he could hear people talking from the offices behind the reception area.
No Longer Interested

After a good 20 minutes of waiting, OP had had enough.
He got up, told the receptionist he was no longer interested in the position, and left.
Stop With Those Comments

In an edit, OP asked people to stop talking about “dodging bullets.”
OP wrote, “Everyone who is saying they dodged a bullet or I dodged a bullet, please stop. This language is inappropriate for educators in light of our current societal and working environment. Thank you.”
What the Community Thinks

Some gave a witty suggestion on how OP should have reacted.
A top commenter suggested, “I would have left them a note marking them tardy.” This user wrote, “Give them a detention. ‘A failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.’”
It’s the Same in Other Industries

A couple of Redditors also shared similar experiences, albeit they worked in different industries.
One man wrote, “The general manager of a restaurant I worked for had a habit of doing this on purpose. He would purposefully make them wait at least 20 minutes, sometimes over 45 minutes, while he just f**** off, drinks coffee, has some breakfast, etc. His reasoning was that he wanted to test them to see if they were cut out for the job. It was f****** annoying because he was quite literally wasting their time. Then one day, he had someone wait so long that he forgot about them and headed home. About two hours later, the poor guy finally worked up the courage to ask if the manager was still going to interview him, and we had to break the news to him.”
A Test or a Form of Bullying?

People noted that while those in charge think it’s a good “test,” what it really is is just a form of bullying.
A user stated, “That testing their patience thing is such a red flag. Why would you need to test if someone can be ok having their time wasted unless you intend on wasting a lot of their time?” Another wrote, “It’s evil but effective. They don’t want the headache of people who will stand up for themselves.”
It’s Their Loss

Then, some noted that if companies or people in charge do this, then they’d miss out on competent people.
This Redditor said, “Joke’s on them since those are the people who will actually be good at their jobs.” One person wrote, “They want to lord over desperate doormats. They don’t want people with backbone who will stand up to them. They want people they can call in on their day off. Demand to do a double on the fly without notice. And force them to cover their own shifts if they can’t show.”
Going Down the Drain

Then, some people want companies to wake up and understand that their actions will soon lead to their downfall.
“When you fill your business to people who cater to your bad management, that company is heading down the drain,” noted one user.
Gross Powerplay

Some even had personal experiences they wanted to share.
This user wrote, “Had a boss that did this and many other abusive things in the workplace, and I quit on the spot. It brought me so much joy when nationally, he got canceled for his disgusting behavior and called out publicly in the news and had to sell up. It was a gross powerplay, I was just too young to understand it for my own interview, but I’m glad I finally stood up for myself and left.”
No Communication Versus Miscommunication

There were also Redditors who completely understood OP’s point of view, saying that the least the school could have done was loop him in on what was happening.
This Redditor wrote, “Employers need to realize that the interview process isn’t just for you, it’s for them too. If they don’t show up on time, that tells you what you already know.”
Do you agree with OP? What could he have done better?
