She was sitting on her flight with a bandaged ankle and an arm sling when this man demanded to switch seats with her. He’s so entitled that he couldn’t see that she was injured!
A Terrible Accident
A year before the story was posted, an unbelievable thing happened to OP (Original Poster).
She and her partner were taking a cross-country flight on a budget airline during the holidays, but a day before their scheduled flight, they got involved in a car accident. Their car was T-boned in an intersection.
I Just Need to Get Home
OP’s partner was physically fine, although “rattled mentally.” She, however, sustained a fractured collarbone and a torn tendon on her ankle.
OP wrote, “We were both far from home visiting family, but staying long enough to heal wasn’t an option, and I decided I just wanted to make it home.”
A Reasonable Request
After dealing with the accident, they called the airline ahead of time to request a wheelchair and early boarding due to OP’s injuries.
She noted, “My ankle was the size of a softball and in a bandage, and I could not put weight on it. I also had my arm in a sling due to the collarbone break. Crutches were not an option because of this. As you can imagine, flying cross-country like this was already a nightmare.”
A Considerate Airline
Fortunately, the airline was great, and they did their best to accommodate the couple. OP reiterated that it was a “super” budget airline, so seats were automatically assigned at the gate unless a person would pay ahead of time to choose.
Due to the situation, OP and her partner were assigned specific seats toward the front of the plane, where she had an aisle seat and her partner the middle one.
Priority Boarding
OP and her partner boarded the plane before everyone else and went to their assigned seats.
She added, “I was in a wheelchair the whole way until we crossed the threshold to the plane. Everyone waiting at the gate or lined up to board after us could see this.”
Filling up the Plane
The next group who were called for boarding were families with little kids. As the families entered the plane, a woman and two kids sat in the row across OP and her partner.
Then, a man approached them and said he was assigned the window seat in their row. With that, OP slowly “hobbled up and out of the way” with much help from her partner, and the man sat in his seat.
A Family Man
Everyone else on the flight boarded, and it was a full flight. The woman across OP was struggling with her kids, and the man in the window seat was clearly the father, trying to talk to her.
OP wrote, “This is where the problem starts.”
Demanding to Switch
They were waiting at the gate for the runway to clear when, suddenly, the man turned to OP’s partner, pointed to the woman and kids across the aisle, and said, “That’s my family. Change seats so I can sit with them.”
Obvious Injuries
However, he wanted the aisle seat that OP was sitting on. To get a better picture of her injuries, she noted that her arm was in a sling, her ankle was fully wrapped up and obviously swollen, and her leg extended into the aisle.
OP noted, “Again, budget airline—these rows have no legroom, so I needed the aisle for my leg due to swelling and for mobility in case I needed to go to the restroom. I am looking and feeling like I was hit by a truck. Because I literally was 16 hours ago.”
Entitled Persistence
OP’s partner looked at the man, completely confused about how the guy could not comprehend the situation, and told him, “No, dude, she needs that seat.”
“Dadman,” as OP referred to him, looked immediately frustrated, pointed at his family again, and said, “No, look. That is my family. Change seats with me so we can sit together.”
Running Out of Patience
OP’s partner refused again, motioned toward her “obviously broken body,” and told him they were at their assigned seats. So, no matter what, they wouldn’t be swapping.
OP wrote, “Dude looks like he wants to argue, but my partner is a bigger guy, and while he’s the nicest person ever, he can be intimidating if he wants to be. I’ve never seen him be aggressive toward anyone, but when he looked back at me, I could tell by the look in his eyes that he was so close to decking this guy.”
Bratty “Dadman”
After that, the man backed up a bit, let out the most obnoxious, exasperated sigh that OP has ever heard an adult make, and rolled his eyes. He then called a flight attendant to argue his case, but she reiterated that those were OP’s and her partner’s seats.
OP added, “He tried to get her to move his whole family together elsewhere, but it was a full flight. She checked that I was okay with my seat and left.”
No One’s Entitled to It!
Throughout the entire flight, the man threw OP and her partner dirty looks to show them he was displeased with the situation.
Although OP felt terrible for the man’s wife for taking care of their kids all alone, forcing her to switch seats with him, given her situation, was inappropriate. Even if that weren’t the case, no one had to give up their seat for someone else.
What an Unbelievable Guy!
OP still couldn’t get over the man’s entitlement, who could have paid an extra $20 to choose his family’s seats ahead of time.
She added, “He’s expecting a clearly injured person to move to accommodate him and being p***** when we said no.” OP also noted that she was drugged and running on “hardly any sleep,” so she just watched this whole situation around her, thankful that her partner looked out for her and did not put up with the entitled man’s “bulls***.”
What the Community Has to Say
People absolutely hated the man’s behavior and commended OP and her partner for not giving in to him.
Someone commented, “I just cannot understand how people can act like that, having such an entitled attitude and expecting everyone to bend over backward for them. Good on you for standing your ground! Old mate can huff and puff and throw dirty looks all he likes, but it won’t do a thing to change his situation. Wishing both you and your partner a speedy recovery!”
“He was a crybaby. A reasonably capable person would know the seating arrangement, which is two sets of three per row, and would have chosen two seats in two rows so each parent could take one child,” another commenter said.
It Shouldn’t Be a Problem
Some Redditors shared their own experience of not sitting together with their friends and family, stating that there was nothing wrong with it. A few people also suggested that the man should’ve been the one taking care of his kids.
A Redditor shared, “On our way back from our honeymoon, my husband and I were not seated together. I’m not sure exactly how that happened, but it wasn’t a long flight. I guess we could have asked someone to switch seats with us, but to us, it wasn’t a huge deal. We were still married when the flight landed and are apart longer at work every day than that flight.”
Someone also said, “Next time, suggest he swap with the mom. She’d get a break.”
What would you do if you were in OP’s situation? Would you switch seats with him?
