This user paid for a window seat so she could get her much-needed beauty sleep on her 11-hour flight. Sadly, an entitled man kept pressuring her to give it up for his wife!
The Usual Plane Configuration
On OP’s (Original Poster) 11-hour flight from New York to Cairo, Egypt, she sat on a big plane with three rows of seats. There were two sets of window and aisle seats on each side, then four or five middle seats in the center.
Pre-planned Seating Arrangements
It was a long flight, and OP had a window over a wing. This, however, wasn’t a coincidence.
She said, “I chose the seat with sleep in mind many months in advance; while I do frequently travel, I’m not going to pretend I often jet away to Egypt, so this vacay was very planned out.”
Switch Seats, Will You?
OP was already settled into her seat when her seatmate sitting on the aisle asked her if she’d be willing to switch with his wife. He said that he wanted them to sit together for the duration of the flight.
Group Tours
As OP observed the people around her, she figured the couple must have been part of a tour group of similar-aged travelers. There were a lot of people chatting, so this further added to her speculation.
A Good-Natured Woman
Since she knew a lot about the industry, she figured the tour organizers might have been “negligent” in seat assignments. So, she was 100% willing to consider a swap if his wife’s seat was comparable.
Nope, Not Gonna Happen
OP asked the man where his wife was. He pointed at her while she waved at OP.
When this happened, she saw that she was in one of the middle seats at the center of the plane. So, she said, “No, sorry, I’m going to keep my seat.”
What He Should Have Done
For OP, instead of asking her to switch seats, he should have asked one of the people beside his wife if they wanted an aisle seat instead. She was sure they would have gladly agreed.
She said that if he did this, he’d get to sit with his wife like he originally wanted.
Messing With Her Head
Well, OP’s seatmate didn’t think the same way, and he just sat down beside her, arguing with her. He kept telling her the view was terrible anyway since it was over the wing, how OP won’t be able to see anything since it was dark, and more.
Since OP was a “pleaser,” she tried to be pleasant. She just said she planned to sleep against the window, and she declined his request again.
Pestering Her Like a Bug
The man had no intention of stopping, though. Instead, he continued to “bug OP like the mosquito he may have been in a former life.”
He asked OP, “If you had a husband, wouldn’t you want to sit with him?”
Clapping Back
OP was already irritated at this point. So she told the man, “I do have a husband, and if my husband and I were traveling together, I’d not only ensure our seats were assigned together, but if they weren’t, I’d give up my aisle and go sit with my spouse in the middle.”
Well, That Got Him!
The man seemed flustered with OP’s direct comments, so he stopped arguing with her directly. He instead grumbled throughout the whole flight.
The Perfect Ending
While the man continued grumbling, fortunately, it was not to OP’s face. He just pretended to ignore her existence for the whole flight, which, to OP, was the “perfect ending,”
She added, “He was still grumbling when we deplaned.”
Redditors’ Opinions on the Matter
Redditors just loved how OP reacted to things.
One said, “He must have been a d*** fine mosquito to get a reincarnation upgrade to human.”
Another commented, “D***. Aedes aegypti—the very worst mosquito. Your better airplanes will be supplied with magazines perfect for swatting.”
It’s a Part of Marriage
Married community members joined in, sharing how, sometimes, they’d be glad to be seated away from their spouse to have some much-needed alone time.
“I have to say there have been times I was happy to be seated away from my husband,” said one user.
Another commented, “I remember one family flight, my husband and 2 kids got upgraded 10 rows forward to the Delta Plus section due to his status. He asked if I wanted to go with the kids instead. Nope. Thanks for asking. I was absolutely fine sitting slightly further back and doing my own thing. They were safe and happy.”
What would you do if you were OP? Have you ever been asked a favor like this before?
