An Entitled Mom Demanded She Trade Her Paid Window Seat for a Middle One, Guilt-Tripping Her for Making a Family Sit Separately! She Refused and Got Body-Shamed the Whole Flight

She boarded her flight, expecting to be at peace in her window seat, only to find someone occupying it. She tried her best to ask politely, but the woman was just so entitled and rude!

A month ago, before sharing this story on Reddit, OP (Original Poster) took a flight home after visiting her parents. When it was time to board, she walked to her seat, 23A, but someone was already sitting in her spot when she got there.

So, she double-checked the seat to ensure it was the 23rd row and found that she was right. She then informed the woman sitting there that it was her seat.

An Aisle in Between

Suddenly, a man sitting in 23D offered OP the 23E seat. They were a family, and the mother didn’t want to be separated from her kids, who were sitting in 23B and 23C, so she took OP’s seat.

OP wrote, “I was confused. It’s not like she will be long separated from her children. The children were in 23B and 23C, and she and her husband were in 23D and 23E. Only separated by an aisle!”

She Has Her Reasons

OP immediately refused. After all, she specifically booked a window seat to help her feel at ease while looking at the clouds and help her fall asleep.

Smothered and Suffocated

The family offered her a middle seat, which meant she would be trapped between the dad and a random guy in a narrow airplane seat. She already felt suffocated just thinking about it.

So, she answered them with a no, saying she booked and paid for the window seat. With that, the mom immediately felt offended and replied harshly, “So you don’t mind we, a family, sitting separately?”

OP thought, “‘‘Well, why didn’t you book the right seats in the first place?’ Didn’t say this out loud, though. I was only replaying my words, ‘That’s my seat.’ I was adamant with my answer.”

Rudely Giving Up

When the woman finally stood, she walked away from OP’s seat while silently whispering angry remarks toward OP. She just chose not to pay attention to them.

However, a few moments later, things changed.

An Offensive Comment

The kids were still seated, so OP could not walk into her seat. She politely asked them to get up for a bit so she could get in.

Then the mother body-shamed her by saying, “Kids, get up. Her body is huge. She could not get in.”

A Sensitive Topic

OP’s height is more than the average woman’s in her country, and she also gained 10 kilograms during the pandemic. Aside from that, she already has body dysmorphia, and comments like the ones the entitled mom said hurt her feelings badly.

With that, she couldn’t just stay silent, so she replied, “So what? So what if I’m huge?” But that did not stop the woman who kept insulting OP even louder.

Apologizing for Her Mother

The woman’s daughter, whom OP assumed to be no more than 12 years old, sincerely apologized and whispered, “Please forgive my mother. She is always like that.”

This helped tune out the entitled mom’s insults, as OP felt sorry for the kid.

An Ill-Mannered Parent to an Innocent Kid

About five minutes later, the angry rant finally stopped when the mother told her children to move seats several rows away. Once again, the daughter apologized to OP.

OP wrote, “It’s crazy to think that a 12-year-old was way more emotionally mature than her entitled 40s mother. The whole time her mother spouted insults at me, the daughter looked pale and her body rigid. Her gaze fixated on one spot. I assume she was very embarrassed. Poor kid.”

The Community’s Take on the Matter

The community believes there’s an easy solution to the family’s seating arrangement, but it seemed like taking the window seat was the mother’s intention after all.

The top commenter wrote, “There were four of them, so they couldn’t all sit together anyway. They could have swapped so that each parent had a kid next to them. Problem solved. She wasn’t just entitled. She was stupid to boot.”

Another person replied to the previous comment, saying, “My guess is she wanted a window seat, but it cost more, so she figured she could bully some stranger out of it and let them eat the extra cost.”

Call the Staff

Others believed that OP should have informed the cabin crew about the situation and had them kicked out of the flight because that could have taught the mother a lesson.

A Redditor suggested, “I would have involved the flight attendant. There are countless videos of people being kicked off flights for harassing fellow passengers. If they would have lost their flight, they would then figure out to make these arrangements and to not attempt to bully innocent bystanders.”

Behavior Can Be Passed

Some then pointed out that parents’ attitudes and behavior can affect their children and their perception of the world. So, if you’re a horrible person, your kid can grow up to be the same.

“It’s like these entitled parents think everyone should allow them to do whatever they want because they can’t be bothered to pick seats like the rest of us. It’s no wonder there are so many children growing up thinking they are entitled as well. It’s really sad when the poor kids are mortified by their mothers’ behavior,” one Redditor wrote.

Have you ever encountered someone like the mother in OP’s story? How did you deal with it?
